Book Description
Excerpt from The Black Sheep Here's a rose! She cried. A rose for you, gen eral! And a pin, too, she added in a lower voice, to pin it over the bravest heart in Beulah. General Harris, whose straw hat-brim seemed to rest on his strong hooked nose, and his nose on his short stiff grey moustache, threw up his head with quite a jerk of surprise, and halted. The heaviest heart, at any rate, said he. God bless you, Beth! And as she pinned the white flower to his black frock coat, he smiled. This will make the young fellows envious. Book Description
Excerpt from Breachley, Black Sheep These bouts of his were the source of infinite pleasure to the younger portion of the community, for at the end of a week Mr. Blackwood would be so ill, and see so many strange animals pursuing him, that the sergeant of police, one Finnegan, would ride off to the nearest town for a doctor. When the doctor arrived, he and the sergeant remained with the patient, and finished the rum with him. Then the two troopers, who, with the sergeant, patrolled the district, would have to lock all three of them up until they got better. Book Description
Excerpt from Black Sheep: A Novel On the eath of Thomas Moore. An Ingoldsby Poem of his was accepted by Marguerite Power, and appeared amongst distinguished company in the Keepsake for 1853, being noticed encouragingly by the press. That year, before he was twenty-two years old, Yates married, an event that seems to have stimulated him to still greater literary activity. He rapidly found his way into several periodicals, and in 1854 published his first book, a shilling series of reprinted sketches, My Haunts and their Frequenters. The same year began a pleasant intimacy with Dickens, which was kept up until the untimely death of the great novelist, from whom Yates received genial encouragement, particularly when he began to write fiction. In 1854, also, he made the acquaintance of Frank Smedley, who was to edit Cruikshank's Magazine for Bogue, with Yates as one of his coadjutors. The magazine soon came to an end, after establishing a friendship between them, which bore fruit in a joint collection of tales in verse, Mirth and Metre, by two Merry Men. Book Description
Excerpt from Blacksheep! Blacksheep With any sort of luck he could escape from the Harbor, reach'new York the following morning and proceed immediately westward. A few telegrams would readjust matters so that he would lose only a day in setting out for Banif, which his newest doctor had told him was an ideal spot for him. Many other doctors had posted him off to numerous other places in pursuit of the calm or stimulus or whatever it was he needed to make him a sound man capable of taking some part in the world's affairs. Arch1e's condition was always a grateful topic of con versation and now that his sister had told him how many bedrooms her menage required, and warned him particularly to be sure that there was a sleeping porch and a garage, and not to forget to look care fully into the drainage system of the entire Maine coast; having watched him make notes of these matters, Mrs. Featherstone, in her most sisterly tone, broached the subject of his health.
