Book Description
Excerpt from The Birds' Convention "The meeting will please come to order." It was Mr. Mockingbird who spoke and, instantly, there was quiet among the birds. "I think you all know why we are here assembled," began Mr. Mockingbird. "It is to hold our First Annual Convention of the birds. All our human brothers hold meetings which they call 'conventions, ' and from what I hear of them, they are most enjoyable occasions. Only last night the mistress of the yard where Mrs. Mocker and I 'dwell and raise our families, was telling her mate of an 'affair, ' as she called it, and I am sure it must have been delightful." "Yes, my friends," spoke up Mrs. Mocker, "our family" - meaning the humans where she lived -"go to many things of that kind. Only a short time ago the daughter went on a moonlight picnic, a thing we would not care to do, although Mr. Mocker always sings these spring nights and would not mind an evening meeting, I suppose." "The boy at our house often goes to 'games' as he calls them," said Mr. Jay. "He is a football player, whatever that may be, and sometimes he comes home all bruised up. I am sure that nothing of that kind will happen at our Convention," and Mr. Jay tried to look meek. Mrs. Goldfinch whispered to her neighbor that she guessed if Mr. Jay behaved himself the others would. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
First written in the 12th century, Conference of the Birds is an allegory of extreme measures for extreme times -- the story of birds seeking a king is the story of all of us seeking God. Like the birds, we may be excited for the journey, until we realize that we must give up our fears and hollow desires, that our journey will be long and hard. Like the duck, we may not wish to leave the water. Like the nightingale, we may want to stay close to our roses. Direct and to the point, Masani's translation, made in the early part of the 19th century, is particularly apropos for our early 21st century times -- both are periods of intense spiritual seeking.

Book Description
Conference of the Birds is John Heilpern's true story of an extraordinary journey. In December 1972, the director Peter Brook and an international troupe of actors (Helen Mirren and Yoshi Oida among them) left their Paris base to emerge again in the Sahara desert. It was the start of an 8,500-mile expedition through Africa without precedent in the history of theater. Brook was in search of a new beginning that has since been revealed in all his work--from Conference of the Birds and Carmen to The Mahabharata and beyond. At the heart of John Heilpern's brilliant account of the African experiment is a story that became a search for the miraculous.

Book Description
Excerpt from News From the Birds Looking more carefully at the difference between the two directions of the new education we can see what each accomplishes. There is first an effort to train the original powers of the individual and make him self-active, quick at observation, and free in his thinking. Next, the new education endeavors, by the reading of books and the study of the wisdom of the race, to make the child or youth a participator in the results of experience of all mankind. These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On' the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage.
