Parrotfishes are nominal herbivores whose grazing is considered an important top-down control on benthic coral reef communities, maintaining cropped reef substrates that are conducive to the settlement and recruitment of coral larvae. As such, parrotfishes are crucial to the maintenance of reef resilience and in facilitating the recovery of reefs to healthy coral-dominated states following disturbance. Parrotfish foraging and its top-down effects on benthic coral reef communities have received substantial attention in the literature, but there are still key knowledge gaps in our understanding of parrotfish foraging ecology. The effects of grazing on benthic reef communities likely depend on how parrotfishes are using space on the reef. In many parrotfish species, large males defend intraspecific territories that include harems of initial phase females. While the social and mating systems of parrotfishes have been described for multiple parrotfish species, the effect of territoriality on space use in parrotfishes remains understudied. Likewise, the influence of spatial interactions on competition and coexistence has not been considered. In Chapter 1, we provide a general introduction to parrotfish ecology, highlighting important gaps in our understanding of parrotfish foraging, social, and spatial ecology. In Chapter 2, we investigate the occurrence of coprophagy (id est, fecal consumption), in five Caribbean parrotfish species in Bonaire, Caribbean Netherlands. We found that coprophagy occurred frequently in four of the five most common parrotfish species in Bonaire. The majority of the feces consumed by parrotfishes were produced by planktivorous reef fishes, primarily Chromis spp. We used estimates of the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous content of Chromis spp. feces from the literature to estimate their relative contribution to parrotfish diets, and determined that the amount of carbon obtained from these feces is equivalent to ~27 % of the carbon intake from their preferred benthic foraging substrates despite representing
