Book Description
In the The BigThrees Takeover of Sport, Dr. Zeigler argues that such a take-over of competitive sport by capitalism, nationalism, and democracy has become a very serious problem that gradually became a crisis as the twentieth century wore on. The main purpose of this bookto show that the commandeering, or take-over, of sport by the conglomerate of three, enumeratedhas created a situation where competitive sport has been increasingly degraded to a destructive professional morality espousing a mentality that screams: Winning is now not the most important thing in sport; it is the only thing! If indeed such is the case, this means that we must move now to assess the evolving situation more carefully than ever before

Book Description
Since their emergence in the 1960s, lifestyle sports (also referred to as action sport, extreme sports, adventure sports) have experienced unprecedented growth both in terms of participation and in their increased visibility across public and private space. book seeks to explore the changing representation and consumption of lifestyle sport in the twenty-first century. The essays, which cover a range of sports, and geographical contexts (including Brazil, Europe, North America and Australasia) focus on three themes. First, essays scrutinise aspects of the commercialisation process and impact of the media, reviewing and reconsidering theoretical frameworks to understand these processes. The scholars here emphasise the need to move beyond simplistic understandings of commercialisation as co-option and resistance, to capture the complexity and messiness of the process, and of the relationships between the cultural industries, participants and consumers. The second theme examines gender identity and representations, exploring the potential of lifestyle sport to be a politically transformative space in relation to gender, sexuality and ‘race’. The last theme explores new theoretical directions in research on lifestyle sport, including insights from philosophy, sociology and cultural geography. The themes the monograph addresses are wide reaching, and centrally concerned with the changing meaning of sport and sporting identity in the twenty-first century. This book was previously published as a Special Issue of Sport in Society.

Book Description
In an era when college football coaches frequently command higher salaries than university presidents, many call for reform to restore the balance between amateur athletics and the educational mission of schools. This book traces attempts at college athletics reform from 1855 through the early twenty-first century while analyzing the different roles played by students, faculty, conferences, university presidents, the NCAA, legislatures, and the Supreme Court. Pay for Play: A History of Big-Time College Athletic Reform also tackles critically important questions about eligibility, compensation, recruiting, sponsorship, and rules enforcement. Discussing reasons for reform--to combat corruption, to level the playing field, and to make sports more accessible to minorities and women--Ronald A. Smith candidly explains why attempts at change have often failed. Of interest to historians, athletic reformers, college administrators, NCAA officials, and sports journalists, this thoughtful book considers the difficulty in balancing the principles of amateurism with the need to draw income from sporting events.

Book Description
Football is undoubtedly the sport with the largest following in the world, attracting billions of fans across the globe. These fans play an integral part in determining the identity of the football club they support. Many studies have focused on the intense rivalry between clubs, their fans and the opposing identities they represent. However, little attention has been paid to examples of cooperation between rival fans. This book is the first to explore antagonistic cooperation in football; the idea that rival fans can work together despite their animosity. With examples from Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Croatia, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, the UK, the US and Zimbabwe, this book brings together case studies on rival fans working together and explores how and why such cooperation takes place. Showcasing original research from a team of international football scholars, it sheds new light on the social and political complexities of contemporary football fan culture. Football Fans, Rivalry and Cooperation is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in football studies, the sociology of sport, sport and politics, or sport and social theory.

Book Description
Strengthening affirmative action programs and fighting discrimination present challenges to America's best private and public universities. US college enrollments swelled from 2.6 million students in 1955 to 17.5 million by 2005. Ivy League universities, specifically Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, face significant challenges in maintaining their professed goal to educate a reasonable number of students from all ethnic, racial, religious, and socio-economic groups while maintaining the loyalty of their alumni. College admissions officers in these elite universities have the daunting task of selecting a balanced student body. Added to their challenges, the economic recession of 2008-2009 negatively impacted potential applicants from lower-income families. Evidence suggests that high Standard Aptitude Test (SAT) scores are correlated with a family's socioeconomic status. Thus, the problem of selecting the "best" students from an ever-increasing pool of applicants may render standardized admissions tests a less desirable selection mechanism. The next admissions battle may be whether well-endowed universities should commit themselves to a form of class-based affirmative action in order to balance the socioeconomic advantages of well-to-do families. Such a policy would improve prospects for students who may have ambitions for an education that is beyond their reach without preferential treatment. As in past decades, admissions policies may remain a question of balances and preferences. Nevertheless, the elite universities are handling admission decisions with determination and far less prejudice than in earlier eras.

Book Description
An expert craftsmanship of sports journalism and a powerful statement about the business of sports and economy. Certain character depictions are fictitious to convey the utter seriousness of a sport's specification where the ownerships of Champcar waged a boycott against IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Otherwise, "oil and gas" is a tightening up of economic realities, the real people on the verge of a financial takeover and how such economies work in relation to Major Leagues Sports in historically speaking the most productive times in U.S. economy. The Heists are back and Phil Elmach driving for James Sedgwick. Only in "oil and gas," Elmach joins Jake Coote and the experts in the Sunshine State. Turbochargers made the stealthiest cars, and successively IndyCar's resolution of a sport's escalation costs. To the supercops, the top outfits in the Champcar-IndyCar merger war pose a threat in a downturn economy and the owner-teams recognize that tires aren't the only switch-ups, but teams transferring into IndyCar. In the shuffle of cash, egos, and clashes, everyone gets caught to the comic drama of staying steps ahead of a supercop. In the chase, the story distinguishes myth from the legendary figures. Miles Deere's epic battles fit the grand schemes. Ground effects sold on American March know-how was a version of Desert Storm on neighboring Area 51 and runs open wheel cars in excess of constructor rules. The Heists have nabbed the technology, or at least former American March Jake Coote as advisor-teammate to Elmach's own answers.
