Book Description
Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of the Soul: An Answer to the Question: Is the Popular Conception of the Soul That of Holy Scripture? It is at most but a sketch. From among the multitude of proof texts on this point, the writer has endeavored merely to present a suficient number: And, to stimulate inquiry and remove obstacles which have hindered inde pendent research, he has made some suggestions, rather than an elaborate argument. In these matters which reve lation alone may presume to decide, he has desired to lead the reader back to the Bible, to study for himself the teach ings of that inspired guide. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of the Soul I have given this book the title it bears because it describes, as accurately as any other, the main idea and contents of it. The topics discussed are varied, but they are all gates into the same field. They come back, like radii from a circumference, towards one centre. The object sought in them all has been, starting from these different standpoints, to pene trate the mystery of the soul of its life, its faculties, its possibilities, its relation to God, man and the universe. I offer no reasoned philosophy of the theme far less a theology. The most I can hope for is that my readers may find here some material for both; material for suggestion if nothing more. I have written under the conviction that there is nothing that is happening in the crowded field of modern life but finds its explanation in our spiritual condition; that no one of our pressing problems, whether of labour unrest, of religious difficulty, of social reorganisation, but must seek its solution in the recesses of the soul. Book Description
Excerpt from The Debate of the Body and the Soul The conception underlying the Debate of the Body and the Soul is very old. Two interesting passages in Plutarch show the idea m a rather definite form, and justify us in supposing that the comparative advantages or disadvantages accruing to Soul and Body' from their association in this life was a well-known theme in the discussions of the ancient schools. Along with other bits of antique lore, this general conception passed into the confused stock of moral, psychological, and religious beliefs that mingled with Biblical doctrines in the minds of the early Christians, and thus, reinforced or modified by divers traits from the Orient, it became a part of the medi aval consciousness. Among the documents which influenced the growth of the legend, an obscure, but significant, role was played by the apocryphal Vision of St. Paul, assigned to about 380 A. D and by an uncanny tale sometimes assomated with _st. Macarius of Alexandria, a holy man of the fourth century. Book Description
Excerpt from A Workingman's View of the Bible All accurate knowledge is based on established facts. A conception of mathematics must begin with an idea of a digit or an individual thing. So it must be with the Bible. This fact, it seems to me, is that God, or a First Cause, expressed Himself in the material universe and in the soul; that is, the thoughts and ideas of God are ex pressed in the laws of nature and in the soul, just as the thoughts and ideas of man are expressed in his actions and products. Not that god Is. This is implied. But that God expresses Him self. This is stated. The Bible treats the expression of God in the material universe as completed, while the soul is yet growing and developing under His guidance. The development of this soul is, therefore, the subject of the Bible. Thus I look upon the narratives of Adam and Eve, and Cain and Abel, as portraying the laws of the soul and showing the process gone through in arriving at certain consequences. The further narratives covering the entire Book show the growth of the soul from that condition to its pres ent development, and the complete compliance with these laws by Jesus Christ. Book Description
Man a Soul; or The Inward, and The Experimental, Evidences of Christianity by Artemas Bowers Muzzey is a spiritual, philosophical, and religious examination of the very nature of man. Based on a series of conversations Muzzey had with a man near the end of his life, in which "God was pleased to bless to him the words of my lips," this book intends to impart the wisdom of Muzzey's teachings to those interested in spiritual discussions anchored in the Christian faith. Man a Soul sees the author tackling some of the headiest and most challenging subjects approached by any spiritual or philosophical thinker. The first chapter deals with the nature of man, the meaning and purpose of the body, and the soul and spirit of all people. In later chapters, Muzzey discusses religious skeptics, arguing that, "Before one can have a full faith in the reality of the spiritual life, he must at least have commenced leading that life." The book leans heavily on The Bible for many of its teachings. As such, this text is best read by those with at least a passing familiarity of the teachings of the Christian holy book. While certainly one does not need to be a Christian to read Man a Soul, many of the author's teachings echo those of The Bible. Regardless of one's personal belief system, the topics tackled in this book will likely be of interest to anybody intrigued by spiritual thinking. The author writes in an accessible style, inviting the reader to join along on a spiritual journey. However, this book is probably most intended for a Christian audience, and it is followers of the Christian faith that will likely find the greatest value in Muzzey's work.
