Book Description
Excerpt from By-Products of the Rural Sunday School Increasing attention is being given to the Sunday school. This is due to the recognition that it has become the most important agency in the religious instruction of our youth. We do not refer to the Sunday school apart from the Church, but to the Church working through the Sunday school. We are beginning to realize that In America both the Church and the nation must depend largely upon the Sunday school for the Christian instruction of our boys and girls, as well as for the Bible study of our adults. Earnest efforts are being made to render our Sunday schools more efficient, so that better and more abundant results may be obtained from the work done in them. Consideration, however, has thus far been given for the most part to the larger schools in our towns and cities. It is well for us, therefore, to have our attention directed to the smaller rural schools. The majority of our Sunday schools are of this character. In many cases these schools are taking the place of churches in scattered communities. A church could not be supported, but a Sunday school can be carried on by the people themselves, and may become the center of the religious life of the neighborhood. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pedagogical Bible School: A Scientific Study of the Sunday School, With Chief Reference to the Curriculum It is a real pleasure for me to accede to Mr. Haslett's request that I write a word of introduction to his book. A good part of the work was done while the author was attending my seminary and taking lectures in Clark University. While I cannot say that I agree with Mr. Haslett in all points, I do believe that the spirit and method of his work mark a noteworthy advance in Sunday-school work and are emphatic protests against many abuses and antipedagogical methods now widely in use. The writer takes the standpoint of the religious and moral nature and needs of the child, has studied the Sunday-school and the literature upon it for years with great diligence and has here written a book sure to benefit all Sunday-school workers who read it. The plain precepts of common sense seem to suggest that in a large general way the order of the books in both the Old and the New Testament as they stand are genetic and pedagogic. Book Description
Excerpt from Bible and Church History Stories: For the Primary Department of the Sunday School We are sending this work, Bible and Church History Stories, to the teachers of the Primary Department as their official guide for our two years' course of study. In doing so we earnestly hope and sincerely pray that the stories will assist the teachers in presenting to the chil dren under their care lessons that will so impress the lit tle folks as to broaden and strengthen their characters, increase their faith, and make Latter-day Saints of them. Never fail to read and prayerfully study the Bible text itself, that you may be able to live the experience covered by the story, recognize the value of the truth it portrays, make the 'message your own, and from the abundance of your love for the truth, for our Heavenly Father, and for the children, give it to the little ones in such a way as to lead them to know, to fee-l, and to live the truth. Remember always that the story is but a means and not an end - a means to reach and enrich their souls - not merely their intellects. Tell it to them in your own way - the way best calculated to appeal to the hearts of the children of your class. Remember, however, that there are certain fundamentals that make for good story telling. First there must be an interesting Point of Contact Each lesson is provided, with one. You may use it or think out one that will go better. Lastly a good appli cation of the story to the child's life should always be made. Likewise is each lesson provided with an applica tion. The teacher is at liberty to improve on it. Possibly the application can better be fitted to local situations. The Text only is mandatory. However, we expect consistency. If you change the lesson plan at.all, make it consistent throughout. May the Father give you to feel that you have painted upon the living canvas of the soul the lessons of God and truth and immortality that shall resist the decaying hand of time and pass on to eternity. Though simply told, we indulge the hope that these stories will find a welcome in the homes of the p'eople for fireside reading.
