Book Description
Excerpt from The Belgians at Home In the following book the writer has not sought to provide "A History of Belgium," a purely architectural or archaeological "guide" to its beautiful and historical buildings, or a detailed treatise upon its world-famed art treasures. There are already many volumes which cover separately and fully all these aspects of the country and its possessions. The present volume deals with Belgium and its people from the point of view of a rambler who has at various times cycled and travelled many hundreds of miles along its highways and by-ways, and has sought to learn something of its past history, greatness, and romance, and to see many of its greatest architectural and art treasures in most of its known, and some of its comparatively unknown, towns and villages. It is a record of things seen and impressions gained. An attempt to present within the compass of a single volume of reasonable length the Belgium of the past and of to-day, and something at least of its alluring charm, picturesqueness, and extraordinary interest for the tourist and the student, whether of history, art, or character. Every care has been taken with the spelling of proper names, and to verify dates. But it need not be pointed out to the experienced archaeologist or historian that often these are conflicting. A standard authority has been followed in each case, and the author trusts, therefore, that in this respect there will be very few errors discoverable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. William Wetmore Story and His Friends (Abridged, Annotated)
Author: Henry James
Publisher: BIG BYTE BOOKS
ISBN:
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 380
Book Description
Henry James' masterful biography of the life of American sculptor, William Story, is a long-forgotten treasure. He includes excerpts of letters from Story's large circle of prominent friends, including Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, James Russell Lowell, Charles Sumner, and others. James, knowing his subject was not a significant figure, chose to make the book more about a reminiscence of Italy (where he had met Story) and the far more prominent people who were friends of Story's. The biography then became by turns a fascinating look at art, Europe, and Americans abroad as only Henry James could have written it. Includes Volume I and Volume II. Well-received when published in 1903, for the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE by clicking the cover above or download a sample.
