The Beatles and Vocal Expression examines popular song through the topic of paralanguage – a sub-category of nonverbal communication that addresses characteristics of speech that modify meaning and convey emotion. It responds to the general consensus regarding the limitations of Western art music notation to analyse popular song, assesses paralinguistic voice qualities giving rise to expressive tropes within and across songs, and lastly addresses gaps in existing Beatles scholarship. Taking The Beatles’ UK studio albums (1963–1970), paralinguistic voice qualities are examined in relation to concepts, characteristics, metaphors, and functions of paralanguage in vocal performance. Tropes, such as rising and falling intonation on words of woe, have historical connections to performative and conversational techniques. This interdisciplinary analysis is achieved through musicology, sound studies, applied linguistics, and cultural history. The new methodology locates paralinguistic voice qualities in recordings, identifies features, shows functions, and draws aural threads within and across popular songs.

He also provides a provocative analysis of the roots of rock’n’roll, arguing that the paternal guard of the time, born in the first two decades of the twentieth century, were traumatized on a subconscious level by the mistakes of their parents and, in losing respect for them, turned a blind eye to, and as a result tacitly supported, the flaunting of moral codes by their own sons and daughters in the 1950s and 1960s ‘without having been placed under any real obligation to do so’ [p. 13]. It is out of this that the Beatles’ individual biographies are discussed. Furthermore, Sullivan argues that what gives the Beatles and their music their real distinction is their location, temporally, between the modern and the postmodern world views. The albums ‘between Rubber Soul in 1965 and Abbey Road in 1969 constitute ... the first popular post-Modern classic’ [p. 172]. This is an innovative though never obtuse piece of writing, and stands as the first real attempt to theorize the Beatles’ life and work. Embodied Expression in Popular Music illuminates under-researched aspects of music theory in popular music studies by situating musical analysis in a context of embodied movement in vocal and instrumental performance. Author Timothy Koozin offers a performance-based analytical methodology that progresses from basic idiomatic gestures, to gestural combinations and interactions with large-scale design, to broader interpretive strategies that engage with theories of embodiment, the musical topic, and narrative. The book examines artistic practices in popular song that draw from a vast range of stylistic sources, including rock, blues, folk, soul, funk, fusion, and hip-hop, as well as European classical and African American gospel musical traditions. Exploring the interrelationships in how we create, hear, and understand music through the body, Koozin demonstrates how a focus on body-instrument interaction can illuminate musical structures while leveling implied hierarchies of cultural value. He provides detailed analysis of artists' creative strategies in singing and playing their instruments, probing how musicians represent subjectivities of gender, race, and social class in shaping songs and whole albums.
