THE BATTLE OF MEGIDDO INTRODUCTION The Battle of Megiddo on May 15th, 1479 B.C. between the Egyptians under Thutmose III and the allied forces of the Syrian states is the first battle in history which we can study in any detail. Most of the ancient oriental accounts of battles are mere statements of the forces engaged and of the outcome of the conflicts. Among the Egyptian records, however, there are preserved in considerable detail the narratives of two or three engagements from which we can gather, with greater or less clearness, the general plan of each battle, the disposition of the troops and the manoeuvres of the opposing armies.1 So far these battles have been studied either without reference to the topography of the battlefields, or with insufficient data regarding the physical features of the area of operations and the bearing they must have had on the course of the engagement. In the following discussion of the Battle of Megiddo it has been my endeavor to interpret the scanty records of the conflict preserved in hieroglyphic in the light of the topography of the region, which I studied on two visits to the battlefield in the summers of 1909 and 1912. On those two occasions I mide a series of surveys and took a number of photographs which are here reproduced. They include a sufficient number of views to bear out my observations on the topography which are contained in the text of this discussion. The Battle of Megiddo was not only the last large cavalry offensive in world history, but also a tribute to combined arms operations fostered over the course of the First World War. Fought between 19-25 September 1918, it was the final Allied offensive of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign. The contending forces were the British Empires EEF (Egyptian Expeditionary Force) of three infantry and one mounted corps pitted against the Ottoman-German Yildirim Army Group which numbered three weak armies with the approximate total strength of a single enemy corps. Comparable to what General Erich von Ludendorff called the Black Day of the German Army (opening of the Battle of Amiens, 8 August 1918) on the Western Front, the complete Ottoman defeat would have been impossible without the application of superior logistics. Whilst Megiddo did not determine the outcome of the war in the Middle East, the ramifications of the victory decisively shaped the post-war world in the region.

Unlike the Western Front, Egypt and Palestine were undeveloped with wide expanses of land. It was ripe for the development of maneuver warfare using the mechanical products of the industrial age: motor cars, machine guns, tanks and aeroplanes. In particular, the use of aeroplanes proved vital to the successful British defense of the Suez Canal by providing reconnaissance of enemy formations and early warnings of attack. This role of the Royal Flying Corps expanded in this theater to cover the breadth and depth of British efforts at the tactical, operational and strategic levels. The strategic success of the Royal Air Force in wrestling air superiority from the Germans was the key that allowed the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) to prepare and conduct its campaign against the central powers across the plains surrounding Megiddo. It provided the EEF intelligence of enemy positions, freedom to maneuver forces undetected, and the depth to attack and rout the retreating Turkish forces to the point of annihilation. The evolution of local air superiority in Palestine, properly coordinated with the ground offensive, was the deciding factor for victory in that theater.
