Book Description
"And there is danger of death-for mother and child?" "Well, no, Sir Jasper-no, sir; no certain danger, you know; but in these protracted cases it can do no harm, Sir Jasper, for the clergyman to be here. He may not be needed but your good lady is very weak, I am sorry to say, Sir Jasper Kingsland." "I will send for the clergyman," Sir Jasper Kingsland said. "Do your best, Doctor Godroy, and for God's sake let me know the worst or best as soon as may be. This suspense is horrible." Doctor Parker Godroy looked sympathetically at him through his gold-bowed spectacles. "I will do my best, Sir Jasper," he said, gravely. "The result is in the hands of the Great Dispenser of life and death. Send for the clergyman, and wait and hope." He quitted the library as he spoke. Sir Jasper Kingsland seized the bell and rang a shrill peal.

Book Description
The lovely and descriptive writing entices the reader to read each chapter at first glance. The narrative begins when the early express trains from Montreal to Portland, Maine, get congested. Mr. Richard Gilbert, an attorney from New York, arrived five minutes early and found only one empty seat near the door. When Mr. Gilbert took over the place, a crusty old farmer grabbed the top and pushed it violently toward the window in anger. And Mr. Gilbert, pleased with himself for getting a spot near the stove, opened the soggy Montreal True Witness and settled down for a reading session. He opened the main article, read three paragraphs, and hadn't returned to it since. When the door opened, the March wind howled, the March rain poured in, and Mr. Richard Gilbert lifted his eyes to see a new passenger at the doorway. It was written by May Agnes Fleming, one of the first Canadians to achieve great success in her field as a well-known fiction author.

Book Description
Carrie MacMillan, Lorraine McMullen, and Elizabeth Waterston have uncovered information about the lives and works of six such writers. Rosanna Leprohon, May Agnes Fleming, Margaret Murray Robertson, Susan Frances Harrison, Margaret Marshall Saunders, and Joanna E. Wood were once-popular novelists who are now for the most part ignored, with virtually all of their works out of print. MacMillan, McMullen, and Waterston show that these six writers deserve modern recognition not only for their literary accomplishments but also for what they reveal, through their work and their lives, about the condition of the woman writer in nineteenth-century Canada. The writings of these six women from varied backgrounds reflect their different experiences of life in the late nineteenth century. In this study a biographical profile of each author, set in the contemporary social context, is provided, as well as an analysis of career development, emphasising publishing history and critical response. As each case history unfolds, the broader picture emerges of an era when many ideas of personal and public life were changing.
