Book Description
Excerpt from The Assurance of Faith, Vol. 1: Or Calvinism Identified With Universalism Indeed at no time is he conscious of having intentionally rendered it subservient to the promotion of his secular interests. From an early period of life impressed with a deep conviction of the importance of the subject, and having had it almost always present to his mind, his great, his paramount anxiety was, to find out, if possible, what in regard to it might be the truth. Years, however, rolled on, without bringing to him what he so ardently desired. The study of different systems of religion, and still more of the characters of those by whom these different systems had been broached and supported, instead of satisfying, contributed but the more to puzzle and perplex him. Frequently, before his mind opened to the truth, did he fancy that he had attained to the object of his wishes; and yet, as often as, in calm sobriety, he allowed himself to consider the theory which at first sight had captivated him, he discovered about it a hitch, a something which could not abide the test of strict examination; and above all, although, by means of it, conscience might for a time have been lulled asleep, he soon found it rising again in all its majesty, asserting its natural supremacy, and charging him with guilt in a way, which the particular theory did not enable him fully, finally, and triumphantly to refute. Book Description
Excerpt from Assurance of Faith: A Sermon Preached Before the Convention of the Congregational Ministers of Massachusetts, in Brattle Street Meeting-House Boston, May 31, 1849 WE have in this passage an eloquent and impressive assertion. Of God's infinite superiority to all counsel and control from his: creatures. Except SO far as he sees fit to reveal his designs, they are undiscoverable by any art or sagacity of the highest orders of his rational Offspring. The doctrine of the text is that of the scriptures in general; and commends itself to every re flecting and enlightened mind. As a truth of great practical importance, it should be remembered in all our religious enquir es, and in the opinions we adopt concerning God, and the prin ciples and conduct of his government. Not a little of the rea soning which is employed, in relation to the Most High, is rash and presumptuous; assuming a degree of knowledge in crea tures, which is incompatible with the necessary limitation of their faculties, and their dependence on the Creator. Book Description
Excerpt from May I Believe?: Or the Warrant of Faith While I have learned that, in such cases, nothing but the illumination and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit can give deliverance yet I have also learned that the Spirit works through the truth, and that only as we learn and appreciate the truth of God's word, can we arrive at clear, settled, cheerful hopes of mercy through Jesus Christ. Should any one therefore ask why I venture to publish a book of this character, I have but one answer to make. A desire to aid all persons subjected to such darkness of mind, to find the immediate and perfect relief which the gospel of the grace of God gives, has suggested the work and urged its preparation. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Faith: And Other Sermons These words are used by Paul, not merely as a preacher of the Gospel nor as a Divinely appointed teacher of holy things, nor exclusively as the great apostle to the Gentiles, but as a sinner saved. Therefore, others who have experienced this great salvation may bear the same joyful testimony. You and I, if Sinners saved by grace, if rejoicing in the same glorious assurance, may, with Paul, declare, the one to the other, and to all the world around, The life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. I. These words clearly teach that Christ is the source and that faith is the condition of spiritual life. I live by faith in the Son of God.
