Book Description
What is the value of the visual arts in international cultural exchange? What do exhibitions of wok by leading British artists communicate as they travel overseas? For more than eight decades, the British Council has sent British art abroad as ambitious acts of cultural dialogue with over a hundred countries, from Afghanistan to Zambia. Along the way it has amassed a distinctive and unique national art collection, comprising over 8500 pieces, ranging from painting, print and sculpture to film works, photography and craft by some of the most significant artistic talents of the 20th and 21st centuries. It continues to acquire new art by emerging practitioners and to operate in new geographical territories using innovative methods of cultural engagement. Its works are on display in over 100 countries worldwide, and its exhibitions are seen by millions of people per year. Art without Frontiers follows the expectations made of visual arts in the work of the British Council since 1935, locating its achievements in the shifting contexts of global politics and art history across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Through a series of chronological exhibition histories that act as testing grounds and turning points, Art without Frontiers explores key moments in the British Council's visual arts programme and, in particular, the development and use of the British Council Collection, to examine what art can do for cultural relations in an ever-changing world.

Book Description
You Are an Artist is for everyone who wants to be an artist, but has been too afraid to take the plunge. It combines a thought-provoking meditation on art practice with a series of practical exercises and creative provocations that encourage everyone to fulfil their potential as an artist. The book is itself a kind of art school, helping the reader to work out what kind of artist they are, and what they can achieve. Drawing on the authors experience as an art school teacher, it playfully adapts the methods of art education, mixing these with the sideways approach to creativity popularized by the authors activist campaigns. Smith provides an array of ideas, tips and practical examples, illustrated with documentary photographs of his own specially made work. His riotous paintings and installations are set alongside discussions of time, place, looking, thinking, stealing and becoming, with enlightening forays into the history of art and creativity. A collection of hilarious, at times startling and often moving narratives bring to life a series of lessons about the nature of art and inspiration. Each lesson comes with a series of prompts to harness the reader's own artistic capabilities. Whether we like it or not, says Bob and Roberta Smith, we have been enrolled in the world, and the world is an art school. You are an artist, because every human being who has ever lived was once an artist.

Book Description
This report acknowledges that cuts in public spending will have a major impact on arts and heritage organisations, and some may well be forced to close. However, the report also notes that over recent years the arts have enjoyed a period of high levels of public investment and criticises the Arts Council in particular for wasting money on some projects. In particular the case of the Public gallery in West Bromwich, which the Committee considers a gross waste of public money by the Arts Council, is highlighted. The Committee realises the impact that cuts in public spending will have however they feel it is right that all sectors share the burden. This report suggests ways in which arts and heritage organisations might improve financial management and explore other funding schemes.
