Book Description
Excerpt from The Art Journal, 1876, Vol. 15 It seems probable that among the Romans bookbinding became an Art as soon as square books were substituted for rolls. The first kind of cover having a square shape was a protection in its simplest form, and contemporary with the rolls. It was a leathern cover wrapped round Greek and Roman waxed tablets. When, at a later period, leaves were stitched or stuck together, they were bound in a cover having a movable back, the sides being made of leather, wood, or ivory. When placed on shelves books lay on their sides, and had attached to the covers little cedar tablets inscribed with their titles. Excerpt from The Art-Journal, 1862, Vol. 1 Examples of this kind could be multiplied to any extent, but to bring the extracts a little later down in date, I shall content myself by giving the weekly bill at Chelsea from June 19 to the 26, to show that the same hands, with the addition of a modeller named Gauron, were still employed. Book Description
Richard explores the enshrinement of the classics in American antebellum culture. For the first time, knowledge of the classics extended beyond aristocratic males to the middle class, women, African Americans, and frontier settlers, but the Civil War led to a radical alteration of the educational system that steadily eroded their preeminence.

Excerpt from The Art-Journal, 1850, Vol. 12 To render any system of instruction really available for the improvement of youth, the teachers themselves must be thoroughly conversant with the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from The Art Journal, 1875, Vol. 37 The total estimated stock of gold in the world previous to the discoveries in California and Australia was about and since then (that is in a quarter of a century) the quantity of gold has doubled. Australia alone has contributed to this about The outlets or employment for this gold may be. Reduced to five - coinage, export, consumption in the arts and manufacturing industries, loss or waste, and the reserve held in banks or in private hands. It is extremely difficult to arrive at precision or accuracy on this question, from the multiplicity of documents and returns which have to be compared and tested from various countries; but still a tolerably fair idea may be obtained of this great question, without assuming perfect accuracy.
