Book Description
Excerpt from The Archeology of Lake Mead National Recreation Area: An Assessment The recreation area includes Lakes Mead and Mohave, and its boundaries parallel the course of the Colorado River before Hoover and Davis Dams were built (figure The river crossed a variety of landscapes, emerging from time lower Grand Canyon and flowing west, and then south, through the Mohave Desert on its way to the Gulf of California. This region is one of the more rugged and isolated parts of the United 'states, and archeological remains found here outline a story of how people have survived-or failed to survive-in this harsh land. Book Description
This book examines the creation, characteristics, and tribulations of the first United States National Recreation Area. It also addresses the National Park Service’s historic role in managing reservoir-based recreation in a uniquely arid region. First named the Boulder Dam Recreation Area, this parkland was created in 1936 by a memorandum of agreement between the National Park Service and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Over the course of its existence, the area has served as a model for a subsequent system of National Recreation Areas. The area’s extreme popularity has, in combination with changing public attitudes regarding preservation and safety, presented the National Park Service with tremendous challenges in recent decades. Jonathan Foster’s examination of these challenges and the responses to them reveal an increasingly anxious relationship between the government, the public, and special interest groups in the American West.

Book Description
The drastic contrast between its desert landscape and the deep, blue waters of Lake Mead makes it difficult to envision the park's creation as merely incidental. After the completion of the Hoover Dam, the waters of the Colorado River began to flood the river valley and form one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. The Bureau of Reclamation soon realized the vast recreational opportunities that Lake Mead would provide. Through a memorandum of agreement, the National Park Service was tasked with managing the first national recreation area, formerly known as the Boulder Dam National Recreation Area.
