Book Description
With considerations such as complex-dimensional geometries and nonlinearity, the computational solution of partial differential systems has become so involved that it is important to automate decisions that have been normally left to the individual. This book covers such decisions: 1) mesh generation with links to the software generating the domain geometry, 2) solution accuracy and reliability with mesh selection linked to solution generation. This book is suited for mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers and is intended to encourage interdisciplinary interaction between the diverse groups.

Modelling the Flow and Solidification of Metals
Author: T.J. Smith
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400936176
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 309
Book Description
The origin of this book can be traced to a Workshop held at the University of Cambridge in December 1985 under the auspices of the Wolfson Group for Studies of Fluid Flow and Mixing in Industrial Processes. This Group was es tablished at the University of Cambridge in January 1983 and includes mem bers from the Departments of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Engineering and Chemical Engineering. As its name suggests, the objective of the Group is to undertake, co"ordinate and stimulate research in various aspects of fluid flow and mixing in industrial processes. However, another equally important aim for the Group is to promote co-operation between the University and industry at all levels from collaborative research projects to joint colloquia. The Workshop in December 1985 on 'Mixing, Stirring and Solidification in Metallurgical Processes' which led to this book was one in an annual series of such meetings first held in December 1983. The existence of the Wolfson Group is due to the enthusiasm of its original advocate, the late Professor J. A. Shercliff FRS, Head of the Department of Engineering who, together with Professor G. K. Batchelor FRS, Professor J. F. Davidson FRS, Dr J. C. R. Hunt, and Dr R. E. Britter, were responsible for the initial application to the Wolfson Foundation and for the subsequent direction of the Group's activities.

Advanced Petroleum Reservoir Simulation
Author: M. R. Islam
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119038782
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 592
Book Description
This second edition of the original volume adds significant new innovations for revolutionizing the processes and methods used in petroleum reservoir simulations. With the advent of shale drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and underbalanced drilling has come a virtual renaissance of scientific methodologies in the oil and gas industry. New ways of thinking are being pioneered, and Dr. Islam and his team have, for years now, been at the forefront of these important changes. This book clarifies the underlying mathematics and physics behind reservoir simulation and makes it easy to have a range of simulation results along with their respective probability. This makes the risk analysis based on knowledge rather than guess work. The book offers by far the strongest tool for engineers and managers to back up reservoir simulation predictions with real science. The book adds transparency and ease to the process of reservoir simulation in way never witnessed before. Finally, No other book provides readers complete access to the 3D, 3-phase reservoir simulation software that is available with this text. A must-have for any reservoir engineer or petroleum engineer working upstream, whether in exploration, drilling, or production, this text is also a valuable textbook for advanced students and graduate students in petroleum or chemical engineering departments.

Variational Methods in Geosciences
Author: Y.K. Sasaki
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444597123
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
The last few decades have seen a spectacular growth in the use of variational methods, one of the most classic and elegant methods in physical and mathematical sciences, as powerful tools of optimization and numerical analysis. The tremendous accumulation of information on the use of variational methods in the area of the geosciences, which includes meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, geophysics and seismology, indicated the need for the first symposium on Variational Methods in Geosciences to be organized and held in Norman on October 15-17, 1985. The value of this symposium was enhanced by the number of stimulating and informative papers presented.

The Merging of Disciplines: New Directions in Pure, Applied, and Computational Mathematics
Author: Richard E. Ewing
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461249848
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 223
Book Description
This volume is the Proceedings of the symposium held at the University of Wyoming in August, 1985, to honor Gail Young on his seventieth birthday (which actually took place on October 3, 1985) and on the occasion of his retirement. Nothing can seem more natural to a mathematician in this country than to honor Gail Young. Gail embodies all the qualities that a mathematician should possess. He is an active and effective research mathematician, having written over sixty pa pers in topology, n-dimensional analysis, complex variables, and "miscellanea." He is an outstanding expositor, as his fine book Topology, written with J. G. Hocking (Addison Wesley, 1961), amply demonstrates. He has a superlative record in public office of outstanding, unstinting service to the mathematical community and to the cause of education. But what makes Gail unique and special is that throughout all aspects of his distinguished career, he has emphasized human values in everything he has done. In touching the lives of so many of us, he has advanced the entire profession. Deservedly, he has innumerable friends in the mathematical community, the academic community, and beyond.
