Excerpt from The Antiquary, Vol. 7: A Magazine Devoted to the Study of the Past; January June The importance of these potteries and their extent we can but faintly realize; but we cannot for a moment suppose the Romans would have left them to the mercies of the overflowing tide. Their imperial ideas of public works - their roads, their aqueducts, and their bridges - were models of construe tive skill and durability. What a contrast is presented by the Up church marshes at the' present time, with their sea-covered mud flats, the home of the curlew and other Wildfowl! The corporations who are supposed to exercise jurisdiction over these low-lying tracts of land, and who are armed by special Acts of Parliament to enable them to stay the inroads of the sea, are, like the Medway barges lying at low level moorings. At present the owners of land are supposed to look after their indi vidual interests in the matter of sea protection. But these are sometimes conflicting, and one individual cannot protect his land by a sea wall, unless his neighbours do likewise. This laissez faire system of proceeding, or rather not proceeding, will not do in an age of sanitary inspectors and boards of health. Port Victoria may bring some change in this respect, and embankments, in course of time, again alter the face of the country. "It is with a firm belief in the above sentiments that The Antiquary has been projected. In spite of the fact that this age lives so much in the present, worships progress so keenly, and looks forward to further progress so hopefully, there is in the breast of our 'nation of shopkeepers' a deep-seated reverence for antiquity, a religio loci, which shows itself in the popular devotion to ancient art, whether in architecture, in painting, in design, or in furniture, and in the eager reception accorded to fresh discoveries of relics or works of antiquarian interest, and which finds its expression in the hearty and general welcome accorded year after year to our leading Archaeological Societies when they make their annual excursions and hold their 'Congresses' in pleasant places. "It is hoped that a Magazine devoted to the work of cherishing and fostering the antiquarian spirit in the various paths of inquiry and research, will meet with the support which it aspires to merit.
