Book Description
Excerpt from The Antiquarian Repertory, Vol. 1 of 4: A Miscellaneous Assemblage of Topography, History, Biography, Customs, and Manners; Intended to Illustrate and Preserve Several Valuable Remains of Old Times In bringing before the public a new Edition of that truly valuable work, "The Antiquarian Repertory," the Editor and Publisher finds himself called upon to give, most respectfully, the reasons which have induced him to such an undertaking, and to lay the following statement before his reader, which he trusts will be found equally convincing and satisfactory. The Original Work, published in 1775, and compiled by the indefatigable and excellent Francis Grose, was received by the world with the utmost avidity; and has, in the course of a few years, become so scarce and valuable, that a copy can hardly be procured at any price. For the motives in which this compilation originated, we refer with pleasure to Mr. Grose's own words, as given in his "Introduction," (which will also be found subjoined to this Advertisement, ) and which, although tinctured with that shade of humour so peculiarly his own, is not the less apposite or satisfactory to the purpose of pointing out the advantages derivable to the community from the collecting and embodying of such scarce and valuable tracts, relating to the Antiquities of this Country, (whether in Ms. or print, ) as had escaped the ravages of time, and were only to be found in the hands of the curious Collector, or locked up in Libraries, beyond the reach of the many. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Antiquarian Repertory, Vol. 2 of 4: A Miscellaneous Assemblage of Topography, History, Biography, Customs, and Manners; Intended to Illustrate and Preserve Several Valuable Remains of Old Times The uncommon degree of favour which the First Volume of this Collection has experienced, and the addition Of so many truly respectable names to the List Of Subscribers since its appearance, have relieved the Editor and Publisher from the doubt and anxiety which oppressed him during the formation of the Plan, the arrangement Of the Materials, and the publication of the Work. He Is by no means inclined, nor would it become him, to deny that those painful emotions were excited, in some degree, by his reflections on the importance of his Undertaking, considered merely in a pecuniary point of View; for he had spared no expense in the mechanical and decorative parts of the composition of his Book, and its unfavourable reception would have been attended by a serious loss; but they arose, in a far greater mea sure, from his apprehension that he might probably fail in his humble attempt to furnish matter worthy of the attention of such Readers as those who had patronized him; that he was, perhaps, preparing a repast from which the hungry might rise unsatisfied, and the delicate disgusted - and that he might possibly be doomed to suffer that most severe of all disappointments which we, too often, unhappil y experience from the displeasure of those whom, of all others, we wish to please.
