Burial and Ancient Society
Author: Ian Morris
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521387385
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 278
Book Description
This study of the changing relationships between burial rituals and social structure in Early Iron Age Greece will be required reading for all archaeologists working with burial evidence, in whatever period. This book differs from many topical studies of state formation in that unique and particular developments are given as much weight as those factors which are common to all early states. The ancient literary evidence and the relevant historical and anthropological comparisons are extensively drawn on in an attempt to explain the transition to the city-state, a development which was to have decisive effects for the subsequent development of European society.

Mycenean Pottery in Italy and Adjacent Areas
Author: Lord William Taylour
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521066131
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 262
Book Description
In this 1958 book all the evidence bearing on Mycenean influence in Italy was gathered together for the first time. This evidence consists almost entirely of Mycenean pottery found in south Italy, Sicily, and the Aeolian Islands. Earlier studies on the subject are reviewed in the light of this research and in relationship to Furumark's analysis and classification of Mycenean pottery, but the most important part of the book is devoted to Mycenean finds from the excavations at Lipari and Torre Catelluccia, and to the large amount of pottery, for the greater part unpublished, from Taranto. The book is based on first-hand study by the author on the sites and is supplemented by more than 350 illustrations of pottery fragments and complete vases, very few of which have been previously published, and maps of the central Mediterranean and Sicily. Mycenean connexions with north Italy are also discussed, and the question of possible penetration to other areas in the western Mediterranean is briefly considered.

Rethinking Mycenaean Palaces II
Author: Michael L. Galaty
Publisher: Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press
ISBN: 1938770951
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 265
Book Description
This revised and expanded edition of the classic 1999 edited book includes all the chapters from the original volume plus a new, updated, introduction and several new chapters. The current book is an up-to-date review of research into Mycenaean palatial systems with chapters by archaeologists and Linear B specialists that will be useful to scholars, instructors, and advanced students. This book aims to define more accurately the term "palace" in light of both recent archaeological research in the Aegean and current anthropological thinking on the structure and origin of early states. Regional centers do not exist as independent entities. They articulate with more extensive sociopolitical systems. The concept of palace needs to be incorporated into enhanced models of Mycenaean state organization, ones that more completely integrate primary centers with networks of regional settlement and economy.
