Book Description
Excerpt from Siever's American Shorthand: An Economical System of Writing the English Language In America and Great Britain, where nearlv everything moves at a rapid rate, and where econ omy in time, energy and material has accomplished so much, there is still need for an economical system of writing the English language. This volume is an effort to supply that need. That longhand is not economical is self evident. It is equally evident that economy does not demand the use of more than one system of writing English. A system as old and as well-established as longhand can not be suddenly displaced by any new system, no matter how meritorious that system may be. To bring about the change it will be necessary at first to teach as a shorthand the new system along with the old. When it is proven by experience that the new writing answers every demand made upon it, the old will gradually give way to the new. By the use of a rational system, the average speed of writing can be wonderfully increased without impairing the legibility of what is written. Simple signs are more easily read than complex. NO system of writing has ever made an expert writer. The system has been only an instrument. Some instruments are better adapted than others to accomplish the pur poses for which they were invented. Much depends on the us'er of the instrument. In any calling all are not equally proficient. All do not write long hand with the same rapidity. Perhaps no two shorthand writers would write the same number of words in the same time. In writing, habits ought to be made reservoirs of power. The expert re porter of 60 ought to be able to utilize the habituated stroke first made when a child of 6. With only one system of writing English this would be possible. Book Description
Excerpt from New American Stenography: A System of Shorthand Writing Adapted to Self-Instruction The only apology for this little book is the conviction that shorthand is an art that has not yet reached its full measure of development; and that, after an experience of twenty years with the more prominent systems now in vogue, it was judged better to incorporate the changes suggested into a new system of which they would be integral parts, than to try the thankless task of patching them on to the old. The new wine has a right to a new bottle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
