Book Description
Excerpt from The American Red Cross in This War Two years ago the Red Cross member ship was hardly more than twenty-five thousand; today it is twenty-three million. Two years ago its income for war relief was trivial; this last year it was well over money given twice because given quickly, money skillfully expended by experts, with every penny vouched for and recorded with absolute accuracy and fidelity. And I believe that America is ready to refill the Red Cross treasury whenever the right moment comes to ask for it. America's heart has been deeply touched by the miseries of others. But do we Americans appreciate the seriousness of our own position? I think not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Red Cross, in the Great War It is the effort of this book to set forth the scope, character and effect of the work of the American Red Cross during the Great War. When the war closed more than thirty million Americans were enrolled in the organization. Some of these were in foreign fields; most of them were at home. But, in one way or another, they were all helping. All of them working together made up the American Red Cross. Stories of special sacrifice or devotion cannot be given here and yet few organizations have so closely touched the great currents of human life. Detailed narratives will accordingly follow this book. I have sought here to summarize the work of the thirty millions as a whole. To characterize the Red Cross work of any man or woman, or to attempt to describe it with any regard to proper perspective, would be invidious if not impossible. I have therefore omitted the mention of names. The highest satisfaction any worker in the Red Cross can derive from his work is from the fact that the work itself was well done. The files of the War Council have been freely drawn upon in the preparation of this book. And I want to make special acknowledgment to every member of the force at headquarters, and to the special correspondents and staffs of our foreign commissions, who seemingly have vied with. one another in supplying me, either orally or in writing, with material without which the scope of this book could not be what it is. Indeed it may accurately be said that the book itself is a product of the American Red Cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is important that the American people should know in detail what the Red Cross is doing, why it is doing it, and how it is doing it. That is why the work so far undertaken in Europe is set forth herewith, both as to personnel and performance, in considerable detail. The War Council of the American Red Cross, since its appointment on May 10th, appropriated up to and including Aug. 31, the sum of $12,339,681.87 for work in Europe, of which $10,692,601 is for use in France. Book Description
Excerpt from American Red Cross Work Among the French People As it Would be impossible to give in narrative form a full account of the activities of the American Red Cross among the French during the World War and keep it within the limits of a single volume, and as much of the work was purely technical, it has been thought best to deal with its various aspects in a general fashion rather than specialize on any. It is hoped thereby to inform the reader in an interesting way of the broad character and mom of American Red Cross efforts. It will be noticed that the book deals With work dur ing the war period and the months immediately follow ing and does not attempt to take up post-war activities in detail. Book Description
Excerpt from Under the Red Cross Flag at Home and Abroad Whenever war or serious calamity arouses universal interest in the Red Cm the requests for information increase a hundred fold, and at the same time the mem bers of its stafi are overwhelmed with duties that active relief measures bring upon them. Notwithstanding the fact that Qm' s'czcuse s'aocuse, the writer believes it not unfair to say that Under the Red Cross Flag has been written at such a time of stress and during long drawn-out pressure of work, with many attendant prob lems and anxieties. No cfiert has been made to produce a detailed and complete history of the organization here or elsewhere. Such would require years of study and scores of volumes, for which there was neither time nor ability, and for which the general public has no desire. By this labor of love the hope has been rather to place briefly and simply before the American people something of the fiery of the Red Cross, its origin, development, especially in our own country, and its services for humanity.
