Book Description
Excerpt from The British Journal of Dental Science, Vol. 21: January December, 1878 When Spooner declared, in 1830, that a pulp could be destroyed without the use of the actual cautery, the first glimmerings of real progress began in the treatment of teeth. From that period dates all that can be considered worthy the name of Dentistry. The best thought of the profession was given to this subject, and it has required the combined work of many hands and brains to reach the present advanced position. The apparently simple thing of filling a cavity has cost more thought, more experimenting, and has, in its out working, covered more years than almost any other of modern human efforts. The devotion to the practical has been too great to admit of much or extended observation as to theories. But we have now reached another era, and the active mind is no longer satisfied with the conclusions of the past. The philosophy of cause and effect must be fully demonstrated before mere assertion will be recognised as authority. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Journal of Dental Science, 1851, Vol. 2 I deny, positively, the truth of the statement so often made, that caries of the teeth will always continue to progress, after it has once set in, unless every particle of the decayed bone be removed from contact with that which is healthy. I do not believe that, when the cavity of decay is so filled, as absolutely to prevent ingress of the fluids of the mouth, that the disease ever advances; although my observations upon this point are not sufficient to furnish me with decisive proof that it is so. But I do affirm, with confidence, that a series of observations, running through a practice of ten years, have convinced me that in a vast majority of cases, caries of the teeth remains station ary, if the opening of the cavity of decay is well prepared and the cavity so filled as to exclude every thing from it, although decayed, dead and decomposed bone be left in it.
