I made the suggestion that it might be Of advantage if he joined the local band, as this would enable him to keep up with his music, provide entertainment for himself and others, and perhaps be profitable. Much to my surprise he informed me they had no local organization; that he and a few others had thought of forming a band, but there were so many problems of organization and man agement, questions as to the kind and number Of instruments to be used, the arrangement Of players, practicing and the like (for all were amateur players), that the scheme was abandoned. I was about to suggest that he get some book on band organization, some amateur band guide, when it dawned upon me that I knew of only one, which had been out Of print for some time. The following work is an effort to supply that want, so that it may be possible for a few amateur musicians to unite in the organization Of a band without the assistance of a professional bandmaster.
