Not illustrated. 1878 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter Sixteenth. CICERO'S TUSCULAN VILLA. In considering the much debated question of the situation of Cicero's Tusculan villa, the first point to be settled, is that of the limits and territory of Tusculum. One of the most definite passages to be found among the Latin authors upon the situation of Tusculum, is in Strabo's Geography, (lib. V), where he states that: Nearer to Rome thaa the mountains of Tibur and Preneste, (Tivoli and Palestrina), there is another elevation, connected with the Alban mountain, from which it is separated by the Algidan valley. Upon this height, Tusculum is situated, a well arranged city, adorned with surrounding plantations and appropriate buildings, especially in the part overhanging the plains towards Home. For here, on this side, Tusculum is a fertile and well watered hill, in many parts gently sloping, and containing the most splendid palaces. Joined to it, is the country at the foot of the Alban mountain, having the same natural advantages and the same cultivation. The neighboring fields partly extend towards Rome and her suburbs, and partly towards the sea; the latter are less healthful, but the others are salubrious and well cultivated. From this general description, the more to be depended upon, that it was written in Tusculum itself, in the villa of the emperor, Tiberias, to whose family Straho belonged, it is evident that Tusculum included, not only the summit of the height, but also all its slopes and the fields below, to a considerable extent, as well as the " country at the foot of the Alban mountain. Another conclusion from this passage, is, that since, upon the gentle slopes towards Rome, were most splendid palaces, among these, would surely have been Cicero's, or that which he had...

Book Description
This volume results from the conference "Between Appia and Latina, Settlement Dynamics and Territorial Development on the Slopes of the Alban Hills", held at the Royal Dutch Institute at Rome (KNIR) in February, 2017. It contains 23 methodological, thematical and material culture studies on the historical topographical reconstruction of the Alban Hills in Antiquity with a focus on the area of contact with the suburbium of Rome. Papers present both data from new research and results of research done in the past. In the initiative a range of research institutions partook (foreign Institutes at Rome, Universities, Archaeological Services) and independent researchers stimulating the exchange of current knowledge of this small, but important part of the Campagna Romana.

Book Description
From humble beginnings, Rome became perhaps the greatest intercontinental power in the world. Why did this historic city become so much more influential than its neighbor, nearby Latium, which was peopled by more or less the same stock? Over the years, historians, political analysts, and sociologists have discussed this question ad infinitum, without considering one underlying factor that led to the rise of Rome--the geology now hidden by the modern city. This book demonstrates the important link between the history of Rome and its geologic setting in a lively, fact-filled narrative sure to interest geology and history buffs and travelers alike. The authors point out that Rome possessed many geographic advantages over surrounding areas: proximity to a major river with access to the sea, plateaus for protection, nearby sources of building materials, and most significantly, clean drinking water from springs in the Apennines. Even the resiliency of Rome's architecture and the stability of life on its hills are underscored by the city's geologic framework. If carried along with a good city map, this book will expand the understanding of travelers who explore the eternal city's streets. Chapters are arranged geographically, based on each of the seven hills, the Tiber floodplain, ancient creeks that dissected the plateau, and ridges that rise above the right bank. As an added bonus, the last chapter consists of three field trips around the center of Rome, which can be enjoyed on foot or by using public transportation.
