Book Description
Excerpt from The Age of Washington I might solicit you to follow me back to the ancient and classic memories of the past, or speculate with me on the startling por tents of the future - but these are themes familiar to your studies. The luminous page of Livy, the burning eloquence of Cicero, and the philosophy of the schools of Athens, would afford now but feeble lights for the pathway of an American student, who is to take his position and act his part on the large and ever varying theatre of this wonderful era. Book Description
"In the present volume a clear narrative has been attempted in a very condensed form, omitting and avoiding such technical and abstruse expressions as frequently occur in larger works, and aiming chiefly to be understood by the boys for whom it has been written. In preparing it the writer is largely indebted to the three able biographers above mentioned, especially Sparks and Irving, to whose full and detailed accounts she refers all those who wish to study the subject more minutely."--Preface.

When he has reached his fifth school year, and generally not until then, under present rates of progress, the child is able to read such stories for himself. To meet this need, the morhet now ofers a liberal assortment of serviceable boohs. But between the first-year period and this later period, there exists at present a gap, both in the child' s ability to read and in the mar het supply of boohs which he can read. The child, during these years, is hungering for stories, especially for true stories, and some mothers and teachers try to meet the demand by reading and telling. This is well and good, but it is clear that if this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Boy's Life of Washington IT might almost seem presumptuous for any one to offer another version of the life of Washington, when the ground has been so fully occupied by Worthier pens. After Marshall, Sparks, and Irving have written, who indeed need take up the subject Yet it was suggested that a boys' life of this great man might still be welcomed by the public, and would find readers among the rising generation those who would shrink from a larger work, and yet could find enjoyment in a little book like this. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the State of Washington The history of the State of Washington has been published occasionally in the form of expensive subscription volumes, augmented by the aid extended from generous individuals who were persuaded to have their biographies and portraits added for a monetary consideration. This book is written in the belief that the time has now come when there is a distinct use for a compact record in one volume, free from money-enticing addenda and depending for success upon its own merits. It is intended primarily for the general reader, but the frequent citation to sources will make it usable in such high schools and colleges as may need a text in this subject. Acknowledgments of assistance have been made in footnotes throughout the work. It should, however, be recorded here that the difficult task of preparing Chapter XXXI on "Federal Activity in the State" has been greatly facilitated by the aid of United States Senator Samuel H. Piles, the members of President Roosevelt's Cabinet, and their assistants. The greatest difficulty arose from the fact that much of the information sought had never been segregated as to States. It may transpire that that chapter will blaze the way for a new appraisal of the increasing cooperation by the American nation with the individual States. Governor Albert E. Mead has kindly permitted the use of the portraits of Territorial and State governors collected by him for the State, and George H. Himes, Assistant Secretary of the Oregon Historical Society, furnished a number of the other illustrations. The efficient and tireless help of Charles W. Smith, Assistant Librarian of the University of Washington, is also acknowledged with gratitude. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Washington Although more than a century has passed since the death of Washington, his name is still the most illustrious upon the pages of American history. Living during a period of expansion and changes, as ambassador, statesman, captain-general, and President, he served his country long and faithfully. Inasmuch as the question of expansion is again rife and the conditions of our government are changing, it is well to review his life and character and to place them anew before the youth of our country. Let our young men imitate his unselfish devotion to duty and to the broad and deep principles of true liberty, and we need not fear for the future of our great Republic. In compiling this work, I have been forced to omit much of interest in regard to Washington; yet I have endeavored to include those incidents and facts which in my opinion best bring out his life and delineate his character. Book Description
Excerpt from True Stories of the Days of Washington It was, indeed, scarcely a virtue to be a hero in that time which tried men's souls, and proved them, too. The age grew a crop of heroes the common stature of manly Virtue was not enough; the standard of courage and valor was lifted; the cowards there would have passed for brave men elsewhere. And the women, too, became fired with the Old Spartan spirit. We all know the famous reply Of the Spar tan mother to her son, who complained that his sword was too short; Take a step nearer! Go, said an American mother to her son, a boy Of six teen years, who complained that he had I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
