Book Description
Excerpt from The Adventures of a Donkey: From the French of Mme; La Comtesse De Segur Men not being supposed to be aware of all that don keys know, you, who read this book, are doubtless igno rant Of what is well known to. All my donkey friends, namely: that every Tuesday in the town of Laigle there is held a market, where vegetables, butter, eggs, cheese and other excellent things are sold. This Tuesday is a day of torture for my poor comrades; it was so for me before I was bought by my present good old mistress, your grandmother. I belonged to a farmer's wife, exacting and cruel. Just imagine, my dear little master, that she carried her malice so far as to collect all the eggs her hens laid, all the butter and cheese from her cows' milk, all the vegetables and fruits that ripened during the week, to fill baskets which she placed upon my back. Excerpt from The Story of a Nodding Donkey The Nodding Donkey dated his birth from the day he received the beautiful coat of varnish in the workshop of Santa Claus at the North Pole. Before that he was just some pieces of wood, glued to gether. His head was not glued on, how ever, but was fastened in such a manner that with the least motion the Donkey could nod it up and down, and also side wise. Book Description
The Story of a Nodding Donkey by Laura Lee Hope The Story of a Nodding Donkey by Laura Lee Hope CHAPTER I THE SANTA CLAUS SHOP The Nodding Donkey dated his birth from the day he received the beautiful coat of varnish in the workshop of Santa Claus at the North Pole. Before that he was just some pieces of wood, glued together. His head was not glued on, however, but was fastened in such a manner that with the least motion the Donkey could nod it up and down, and also sidewise. It is not every wooden donkey who is able to nod his head in as many ways as could the Donkey about whom I am going to tell you. This Nodding Donkey was an especially fine toy, and, as has been said, his first birthday was that on which he received such a bright, shiny coat of varnish. "Here, Santa Claus, look at this, if you please!" called one of the jolly workmen in the shop of St. Nicholas. "Is this toy finished, now?" and he held up the Nodding Donkey. Santa Claus, who was watching another man put some blue eyes in a golden-haired doll, came over to the bench where sat the man who had made the Nodding Donkey out of some bits of wood, glue, and real hair for his mane and tail. "Hum! Yes! So you have finished the Nodding Donkey, have you?" asked Santa Claus, as he stroked his long, white beard. "I'll call him finished if you say he is all right," answered the man, smiling as he put the least tiny dab more of varnish on the Donkey's back. "Shall I set him on the shelf to dry, so you may soon take him down to Earth for some lucky boy or girl?" Book Description
On 23 September 1878 Stevenson set out from Le Monastier in the Haut Loire, to tramp through the wild region of the Cevennes. His only companion was a small donkey to carry basic necessities, and a commodious "sleeping sack". In the next 12 days, at a pace dictated by the donkey and carrying most of the supplies himself, he travelled 120 miles across rivers, mountains and forests. His stylish and witty account was published in 1879.

Book Description
Excerpt from Ups and Downs of a Donkey's Life But what has all this to do with our donkey-show? You wonder, children. Well, I only waited to tell you who it was that took it in hand, otherwise you never would believe that such a thing could happen near our old town, where nothing was ever done that had not been done over and over again, and year after year, before our time. We never had had a donkey show, therefore why have a donkey-show now? Such was the general feeling; but Miss Marjorie thought otherwise; therefore it was placarded all about and everywhere for miles round, that she would give prizes to the owners of the half-dozen best donkeys, and a silver medal to the best animal exhibited at Marjoram Grange Show, on Thursday, the sixth of June. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of a Donkey: Abridged From the French of Madame La Comtesse De Segur I DO not recollect my childhood; I was probably as unhappy as the rest of the little donkeys are; and no doubt as pretty and as graceful. Certainly I was full of wit and intelligence, for, old as I am now, I have more of both than most donkeys possess.
