Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus and Lung Cancer
Author: Hung Y. Fan
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540440963
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) is a contagious lung cancer of sheep, first reported in South Africa in 1832 as "jaagsiekte" (chasing sickness). Starting in the 1970s evidence began to accumulate that the etiologic agent of OPA is a retrovirus, culminating in the deduction of the sequence of a novel retrovirus associated with the disease, jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV). Very recently, substantial progress has been made in JSRV research, including isolation of infectious and oncogenic molecular clones of JSRV, identification and cloning of the JSRV receptor, and demonstration that the envelope gene of JSRV functions as an oncogene. This book is a consensus volume that comprehensively reviews all aspects of JSRV research, including natural history of the disease, histopathology of OPA, molecular biology of JSRV, oncogenic transformation by JSRV, and comparison with human lung cancer.

Retroviruses
Author: John M. Coffin
Publisher: CSHL Press
ISBN: 9780879695712
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 856
Book Description
For over 25 years the study of retroviruses has underpinned much of what is known about information transfer in cells and the genetic and biochemical mechanisms that underlie cell growth and cancer induction. Emergent diseases such as AIDS and adult T-cell lymphoma have widened even further the community of investigators directly concerned with retroviruses, a development that has highlighted the need for an integrated understanding of their biology and their unique association with host genomes. This remarkable volume satisfies that need. Written by a group of the field's most distinguished investigators, rigorously edited to provide a seamless narrative, and elegantly designed for clarity and readability, this book is an instant classic that demands attention from scientists and physicians studying retroviruses and the disorders in which they play a role.

Molecular Oncology of Breast Cancer
Author: Jeffrey Stuart Ross
Publisher: Jones & Bartlett Learning
ISBN: 9780763748104
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 642
Book Description
The first comprehensive reference to focus on the molecular development and treatment of the disease, Molecular Oncology of Breast Cancer provides authoritative information across the spectrum of modern breast cancer research and clinical care. Edited by two world-class experts in cancer pathology, drug development, and patient management, with contributions from over 50 experts, this ground-breaking text describes the genes, proteins, and biologic pathways that are being evaluated today and will be tested in the future to derive the molecular signature of each newly diagnosed breast cancer. For the first time, readers can now obtain, in a single volume, up-to-date information on how molecular-based tests are being used to identify predisposition, provide earliest detection, decide classification based on genetic fingerprint and predict therapy-specific outcomes. MOBC includes unique chapters on functional imaging and the impact of targeted therapies on the FDA approval process. This book gives readers vital, up-to-date information on important molecular discoveries that affect the everyday management of the breast cancer patient.

The Mammary Gland as an Experimental Model
Author: Mina Bissell
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780879699062
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Studies of mammary gland biology are critically important given the prevalence of breast cancer in the population. There are many other reasons to study this organ, however. It represents an excellent model system for research into developmental mechanisms, gene regulation, tissue organization, hormonal action, secretion, and stem cell biology, revealing general principles that can be extended to other organs and tissues. This book provides valuable lessons for all cell, developmental, and cancer biologists.
