Anna Akhmatova. A Critical Analysis of her Poetry
Author: Melanie Heiland
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3668838062
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : de
Pages : 19
Book Description
Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Literaturwissenschaft - Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Note: 2, Universität Wien, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: “You will hear thunder and remember me, and think: she wanted storms...”, Anna Akhmatova once said herself. And indeed, this predication became a reality: she is still remembered today, and not only remembered as some poet of the 20th century, but as an outstanding artist and an extraordinary woman. Without doubt she is to be considered as one of the most acclaimed writers in the Russian canon, and her work still has an impact today. Not only being a representative of the Silver Age and of Acmeism, but also living and writing under the shadow of Stalinism, her poetry is characterized by its very distinct style and has to be viewed in that special context. The major part of my essay will focus on Akhmatova’s writing style and the significant character of her works. After giving a brief survey of her biography, as well as a short summary about her work and style in general, I am going to analyze some parts of her poetry in particular, using selected pieces of work. The following questions are going to lead me throughout the whole essay: what is so specific about Akhmatova’s poetry? In what way is her work representative of Acmeism? To what extent did her biographical circumstances and, even more importantly, the political situation in Russia influence her writing? How is her early work different from her later work? And why are her poems still so interesting for today’s reading public?

Anna of All the Russias
Author: Elaine Feinstein
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0307424820
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 358
Book Description
In this definitive biography of the legendary Russian poet, Elaine Feinstein draws on a wealth of newly available material–including memoirs, letters, journals, and interviews with surviving friends and family–to produce a revelatory portrait of both the artist and the woman.Anna Akhmatova rose to fame in the years before World War I, but she would pay a heavy price for the political and personal passions that informed her brilliant poetry. In Anna of All the Russias we see Akhmatova's work banned from 1925 until 1940 and again after World War II. We see her steadfast opposition to Stalin, even while her son was held in the Gulag. We see her abiding loyalty to such friends as Mandelstam, Shostakovich, and Pasternak as they faced Stalinist oppression. And we see how, through everything, Akhmatova continued to write, her poetry giving voice to the Russian people by whom she was, and still is, deeply loved.

Voronezh Notebooks
Author: Osip Mandelstam
Publisher: New York Review of Books
ISBN: 1590179110
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 129
Book Description
Osip Mandelstam is one of the greatest of twentieth-century poets and Voronezh Notebooks, a sequence of poems composed between 1935 and 1937 when he was living in internal exile in the Soviet city of Voronezh, is his last and most exploratory work. Meditating on death and survival, on power and poetry, on marriage, madness, friendship, and memory, challenging Stalin between lines that are full of the sights and sounds of the steppes, blue sky and black earth, the roads, winter breath, spring with its birds and flowers and bees, the notebooks are a continual improvisation and an unapologetic affirmation of poetry as life.
