Book Description
John Stezaker has been collecting photographic city views from the 1920s and 1930s for 30 years. His interest lies in the people that were usually photographed by chance. In his The 3rd Person Archive, he records hundreds of mostly stamp-size details. He describes the archive as a possibility to travel in time. For the viewer, these "miniatures", four-colour reproductions of the black-and-white originals, unfold an enormous imaginative power. One feels like a voyeur observing, in an uninvolved way, the fates and encounters of people in urban labyrinths, a surreal situation that is as disconcerting as it is fascinating. No text.

Third and Indiana
Author: Steve Lopez
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0140239456
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
In the Philadelphia neighborhood known as the Badlands, drug gangs rule absolutely. Each time a life is lost in the carnage of the local drug wars, a boldly drawn chalk outline of a body appears on the street leading up to City hall: a teenaged dealer, a priest, a little girl with a jump rope. Ofelia Santoro rides her bicycle through the dark, decaying streets, looking for her fourteen-year-old-son, Gabriel. She’s afraid of what she might find. Gabriel has fallen in with the most savage of the drug dealers, but now wants to get out—if he can. In this gritty, fast-moving novel, acclaimed Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Steve Lopez brings home the violence that is scarring America’s vast urban wastelands, and the humanity that might save them. “An unfancy prose is streaked by strong, cinematic images . . . Lopez aims to prick consciences, in the tradition of the documentary novelist, and he does so with considerable style.”—The Daily Telegraph “Lopez has done what Balzac, Dickens . . . and Dostoevsky did so masterfully: he has taken a torch to the back of the cave and returned to tell us what he has seen.” –Pete Hamill, The Philadelphia Inquirer

Implementing a crowd-sourced picture archive for Bad Harzburg
Author: Rieke Freund
Publisher: Universitätsverlag Potsdam
ISBN: 3869565454
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 198
Book Description
Pictures are a medium that helps make the past tangible and preserve memories. Without context, they are not able to do so. Pictures are brought to life by their associated stories. However, the older pictures become, the fewer contemporary witnesses can tell these stories. Especially for large, analog picture archives, knowledge and memories are spread over many people. This creates several challenges: First, the pictures must be digitized to save them from decaying and make them available to the public. Since a simple listing of all the pictures is confusing, the pictures should be structured accessibly. Second, known information that makes the stories vivid needs to be added to the pictures. Users should get the opportunity to contribute their knowledge and memories. To make this usable for all interested parties, even for older, less technophile generations, the interface should be intuitive and error-tolerant. The resulting requirements are not covered in their entirety by any existing software solution without losing the intuitive interface or the scalability of the system. Therefore, we have developed our digital picture archive within the scope of a bachelor project in cooperation with the Bad Harzburg-Stiftung. For the implementation of this web application, we use the UI framework React in the frontend, which communicates via a GraphQL interface with the Content Management System Strapi in the backend. The use of this system enables our project partner to create an efficient process from scanning analog pictures to presenting them to visitors in an organized and annotated way. To customize the solution for both picture delivery and information contribution for our target group, we designed prototypes and evaluated them with people from Bad Harzburg. This helped us gain valuable insights into our system’s usability and future challenges as well as requirements. Our web application is already being used daily by our project partner. During the project, we still came up with numerous ideas for additional features to further support the exchange of knowledge.

London and the Politics of Memory
Author: Stuart Burch
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317103602
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 205
Book Description
This book provides an original, impassioned exploration of memory studies and the uses of the past in the present. It capitalises on London’s global appeal and Big Ben’s iconic status. Moving beyond this familiar facade the reader will journey around the hidden histories of Westminster’s streets, squares and statues. This tangible heritage supports a diversity of contested memories. The rationale for this approach is that, by linking theory with empirical examples, it becomes possible to tackle complex issues in a grounded, accessible manner. Readers will be encouraged to use this case study as a framework for addressing the politics of memory in their own lives as well as in other places, not just in Britain but around the world. This book will be of interest to scholars and students from a wide variety of disciplines including, but not limited to, sociology, culture and media studies, English literature, film and television studies, global studies, heritage studies, history, politics and human geography.

The Past Has Another Pattern: Memoirs
Author: George W. Ball
Publisher: Plunkett Lake Press
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 479
Book Description
During his long career as a diplomat, international lawyer, statesman and investment banker, George Ball interrogated Albert Speer at the end of World War II, worked with Jean Monnet to build Europe, supervised the rescue of hostages in the Congo, advised President Kennedy during the Cuban missile crisis and, as Undersecretary of State in the Johnson and Kennedy administrations, was an early and consistent opponent of America’s involvement in Vietnam. “Clarity, serenity and precision are the marks of this major contribution to an understanding of American foreign policy during the past 40 years. The book deserves to be compared with Dean Acheson’s Present at the Creation (but less self-satisfied) and George Kennan’s Memoirs (but less introverted). Although the author is best known to the general public for his opposition to American military involvement in Vietnam, the historian will find his discussion of European issues the most interesting part of the book.” — Gaddis Smith, Foreign Affairs “[A] first-rate memoir of American politics and foreign policy over half a century. It is literate, lively and amusing, and in places it clarifies basic questions about the foreign policy of the United States... The Past Has Another Pattern is a colorful and thought provoking tour of the recent and not-so-recent past, conducted by a skillful guide.” — Daniel Yergin, The New York Times “[O]ne of the great, examined public lives of our time.” — Kirkus “A distinguished lawyer and public servant with experience of Presidents stretching from Roosevelt to Reagan, [George Ball] has written an impressive book of memoirs.” — Douglas Johnson, London Review of Books “A few years ago I read some 70 volumes of biography and autobiography as a Pulitzer Prize juror. George Ball’s memoirs are everything that most of the art is not. While he does not neglect his achievement, he is candid on the things that went wrong. His public life has provided him with a very great deal of very great importance to tell. He writes admirably well. And much of his story is amusing. This year there will, I promise, be no other biography that will be as good.” — John Kenneth Galbraith “George Ball is that rarity — a distinguished public servant who can write; and his memoir is not only indispensable for the historian but absorbing for the general reader.” — Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.
