Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Flight test of an APS-94D real aperture and coherent-on-receive (COR) synthetic aperture radar were conducted by the Coast Guard in three locations of southern and central coastal California between May 19-21 1976. The Geography Remote Sensing Unit provided comprehensive ground truth support coincident with radar overflights. Imagery from the APS-94D and COR radar sets was interpreted and evaluations of the target detection capabilities and resolution characteristics of the two systems conducted. The analysis included both man-made targets and natural seep oil slicks. (Author).

Conducting weapons test in the U.S. Navy's Point Mugu Sea Test Range requires clearing a hazard pattern using aircraft equipped with surface search radar to ensure that inert debris from a weapons system test does not impact non participating vessels or personnel. This mission is referred to as range surveillance and clearance. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss a standardized method that objectively validates an aircraft for use as a range surveillance and clearance asset. The goal is for the method to be cost effective, easily repeatable, adaptable to as many different types of airborne assets as possible, and one which provides the range authorities a high confidence and defendable method to accept an aircraft as suitable for the mission. The proposed method was created from a study of range clearance procedures and requirements. The study included review of directly applicable and analogous test instructions and interviews with range safety personnel, subject matter experts on radar, and experienced mission operators (aircrew and surface surveillance). The method was also based on the author's experience as project officer responsible for testing an aircraft for this mission. The investigation led to the creation of a list of objective requirements, primarily found in current instructions. An organizational process was then defined with the purpose of providing a structure by which roles and responsibilities are assigned, as well as to delineate the final approval authority for the process. Next, a method was developed that uses information gathered about the aircraft under consideration and compares it against the requirements through a preliminary review. This review consists of a computer simulation of expected radar performance and a comparison of basic aircraft performance and capabilities such as range, endurance and speed. Once the preliminary review is complete, the aircraft is evaluated during a ground systems preflight check and a flight test. These evaluations are designed to provide qualitative and quantitative data that can be analyzed to determine if the aircraft under consideration meets the established requirements. Lastly, a method for determining the degree to which the test aircraft met the requirements is presented. This method is explained using available historical data from a flight test report which evaluated a C-130 aircraft configured with AN/APS-115 surface search radar for the range surveillance and clearance mission. The findings of this study indicate that it is possible to develop a generic method for validation that would give the Range Commander a high confidence that aircraft utilized in this mission are suitable for the tasks required. Although many of the test instructions consulted and the author's experience were primarily related to the Point Mugu Sea Test Range, the results of this thesis could be applied to any test range requiring the use of a range surveillance and clearance aircraft.

The Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE)-3 radar test bedat the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Center was installed and evaluated in 1980. Resulting from these tests, it was noted that additional information was required prior to the issuance of the procurement specification. Specifically, the three objectives were: (1) an investigation of anomalous elongation of target returns from F-106 aircraft; (2) to determine if there is an improvement in system performance when oversized waveguide is installed in lieu of standard Ku band waveguide; and (3) a comparison of linear vertical, linear horizontal, and right hand circular antenna feed polarizations with respect to clear weather target imaging performance. This report documents the evaluation conducted and the results of this evaluation. The results indicated that: (1) the target elongation is generated by intermediate frequency (IF) amplifier saturation; (2) oversize waveguide improves system performance and should be utilized for long radiofrequency (RF) runs; and (3) linear polarization improves clear weather target imaging and should be provided to the controller as an option. This research effort examined the feasibility of performing bistatic radar cross section (RCS) measurements in the AFIT anechoic chamber. The capability was established to measure the bistatic RCS of a target versus frequency and versus target azimuth angle. In either case, one of three bistatic angles (angle between transmit and receive antennas) is available: 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees. Accurate bistatic RCS measurements were obtained using a CW radar and utilizing background subtraction, bistatic calibration, and software range gating. Simple targets were selected for validation purposes since their bistatic RCS could be predicted. These consisted of spheres and flat plates (square, triangle, and five sided). Several computer codes were utilized for system validation. Two codes based on the Uniform Theory of Diffraction were used to predict the scattering from the flat plates. A program using a Mie series solution provided the exact scattering from the flat plates. A program using a Mie series solution provided the exact scattering for the spheres, which were used for both RCS predictions and system calibrations.

The results from measurements on five right circular cylinders, which are scale models of one another, are discussed in detail. Evaluation procedures are set forth in order to determine how well each of the ranges performed their tasks. These procedures involve the comparison of measurements on cylinders which should give the same results, or results which should differ by known scale factors, and secondly the comparison of theoretical and experimental results for end-on and broadside aspect angles. Five outdoor radar ranges took part in this evaluation program. Limited tests were made on two of the smaller cylinder models at a sixth facility, an indoor range. (Author).
