Explaining the means utilised by the editors of the Islamic State’s online magazines to win the "hearts and minds" of their audiences, this book is a result of a multidimensional content analysis of two flagship periodicals of the Islamic State: Dabiq and Rumiyah. Drawing from a number of theoretical concepts in propaganda studies, the research uses comparative analysis to understand the evolution of the modus operandi employed by the editorial staff. The volume evaluates the types of arguments used in these magazines, as well as the emotions and behaviour that these triggered in readers. This book concentrates on the formats and thematic composition of a variety of the Islamic State’s e-periodicals, including Dabiq, Rumiyah, Dar al-Islam or Konstantiniyye, from the viewpoint of the constantly changing strategic situation and priorities of the "Caliphate." In nineteenth-century France, authorities feared the inflammatory power of the stage, but sought to exploit it as an effective means of propaganda. The focus of this book is on theatrical representations of Napoléon Bonaparte during France’s Second Empire (1850-1870), a period marked by the impérialisation of the capital through the renaming of streets and public spaces. Many heroes of the revolution and the wars of the Empire appeared with Napoléon in these plays. Several featured members of his family, Joséphine and her son, Eugène, the actor Talma, or the fortune teller Lenormand. Already popular during the July Monarchy, these Napoléon-themed dramas enjoyed a renewed interest with Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte’s rise to power. Although based on historical fact, they were subject to prior government censorship, as were all dramatic works at that time, and were often substantially modified. Intended for a predominantly working-class audience, these historical dramas were carefully revised by the censors so that the narrative they presented strengthening the ties between the First and Second Empires and removed any suggestion of regime change. These dramas highlight the central role theatrical works about Napoléon played in shaping collective memory and myths of national identity during the Second Empire.

The outcome of a scientific conference organized in November 2021, this volume aims to provide a picture of how the aristocratic political class of France and Moldavia sought to challenge monarchical power and how the latter tried to reassert itself in face of this turbulent nobility, in the context of the endemic civil wars that plagued both countries during the chosen period. For this purpose, this volume tries to analyze both the ideological issues involved in these endemic struggles, as they appear in the propaganda of the period, and the practical aspects and consequences (political intrigues or military developments) of the conflictual relationship between the rulers of these countries and their discontented nobles. Divided into two sections, one dedicated to the case of France during the Wars of Religion, the other to Moldavia from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the end of the seventeenth century, this volume is also the result of a collaborative work between French and Romanian academics, who thus tried to bridge what seemed like a (large) geographical gap in order to benefit from different perspectives and thus gain a better insight into different (but maybe not so different) models of early modern European political cultures. In the end, despite the distance between them, in early modern France and Moldavia, to effectively challenge the authority of the king or prince, one had to take up arms: and the nobility, who imagined itself first and foremost as a military order, did exactly that. But there is more to this clash between ruler and rebels than a mere contest of military strength. Despite the apparent political and cultural differences between early modern France and Moldavia, there is one common feature that influenced the behaviour of the rebels in both countries: the need for a justification of the revolt. Since the rebels operated in a political environment where the king (or the prince) was the source of all legitimacy (in particular, the nobility was beholden to the traditional aristocratic ethos of loyalty towards the ruler) and this common mentality of politics shaped the actions of the ruling class, they had to persuade the public opinion (domestic or international) of the righteousness of their cause.

This classic book on propaganda technique focuses on American, British, French, and German experience in World War I. The book sets forth a simple classification of various psychological materials used to produce certain specific results and proposes a general theory of strategy and tactics for the manipulation of these materials. In an introduction (coauthored by Jackson A. Giddens) written for this edition, Harold Lasswell notes that this study was partially an exercise in the discovery of appropriate theory. It raised the crucial questions of how to classify the content of propaganda—for instance, a distinction is made between "value demands" (war aims, war guilt, and casting the enemy as evil personified) and "expectations" (the illusion of victory)—and how to summarize the procedures employed in organizing and carrying out propaganda operations. Propaganda Technique in World War I deals primarily with problems of internal administration and lateral coordination rather than with the relationship between policymakers and propagandists. However, Jackson Giddens enumerates procedures in the book that illustrate an underlying assumption that decision makers were deeply involved in propaganda and influenced by considerations of public opinion. He takes the study of propaganda further by elaborating on the nature and meaning of the category of "war aims" and its relation to the propagandist, for this, more than any other category of content, "is the catalyst of transnational political action." Giddens's exploration of the development of a comprehensive theory of propaganda adds another dimension to Lasswell's study while confirming its value as outstanding groundwork for continuing research.

The study of resistance developed here, by Dr Esther Rowlands, consists of a fresh interrogation of the notion of resistance discourse. Here, for the first time, this detailed study of selected, wartime texts produced by Francis Ponge, Benjamin Péret, Henri Michaux and Antonin Artaud, compiled between 1936 and 1946, presents a specific critique of resistance which investigates the possibility for opposition and subversion to take place without direct allusion to the object of resistance. This investigation questions the criteria according to which literature is perceived as being ‘resistant’ and suggests that historical and political referentiality may be deemed retaliative and reactionary, thereby risking replication of the dominant order. The relationship between language and power structures is elucidated through allusion to modern theorists Michel de Certeau, Michel Foucault, Ross Chambers and Françoise Proust. The necessary framework for a study of the poetic voice draws upon aspects of the post-structuralist work of Jacques Derrida and Giles Deleuze, incorporating specific theories expounded by the Surrealist leader, André Breton. The works of the above theorists are foundational to this new critique of poetic discourse which, when applied by Dr Esther Rowlands, to the wartime works of the four named writers, suggests that language itself may be recognised as a locus of resistance. This book is designed to be of interest both to undergraduates and to researchers studying Surrealism, Second World Wartime Literature and Critical Theory.
