Book Description
"This title was first published in 2000. Since the 1970s there has been widespread debate on the potential of information communication technologies on the organization of work and in particular, the implications of and opportunities engendered through telework and the decentralization of the workplace. However, despite the possible spatial, cultural, social and economic implications, much of the telework debate has been informed by anecdotal examples, journalistic reporting and individual forecasts. This book aims to further the debate by analyzing the scale, nature and experience of telework in the countryside. It examines how and by whom, telework is set up, and what policy and social changes are taking place to facilitate it in rural areas. Individual teleworkers and the organizations using them are questioned to assess whether rural teleworking is proving as advantageous in practice as it is thought to be in theory. Its conclusions suggest that teleworking may not yet be the solution to the many rural problems such as unemployment and depopulation and that businesses and local authorities still need to develop their policies and strategies to allow this type of working to reach its potential."--Provided by publisher.

Book Description
From the people who work exclusively from home to the 'portable' manager with no fixed site, the need to communicate is paramount. Mike Johnson's candid appraisal of teleworking, or telecommuting as it is also known, looks at the key benefits: for the individual it provides the opportunity to work from home; for the company it provides major savings on costs. The down side is the lack of human contact and the anxiety of employees who work away from the centre of things. The ...in brief books provide a critical 'snapshot' of the major management fashions and fads influencing business strategy. They cut through the consultants' jargon and steer a practical, common sense course through the theory and hype. They provide managers with a balanced view based on evidence rather than missionary zeal, so that they can be better informed.

Book Description
Live abroad without sacrificing the security and benefits of your current career! It's possible if you become an international teleworker. Imagine working out of your home office during the day while being as close as you want to world-famous cities, historical sites, and stunning landscapes. Or perhaps you are from another country, found a good job in the United States, and now want to return to where you grew up to be closer to your family. Whatever your interest in living abroad, teleworking internationally enables you to stay on a career path you enjoy. The advantages to you and even your employer can be significant - so long as you know what you are getting into and avoid some of the potential traps along the way. If you find yourself dreaming about changing where you live but not what you do, this book will be your practical guide for turning your vision into a reality. It will help you to: 1. Decide if moving outside of the United States is something you really want to do. 2. Determine if doing your job remotely (i.e. teleworking) is feasible and a good fit for you. 3. Identify the questions you need to ask regarding taxes, social security, and other logistical implications of international teleworking. 4. Anticipate your management's perspective and the risks your company may be exposed to when you live abroad. 5. Develop your proposal for a telework agreement, and know what items you should be prepared to negotiate with your supervisor. 6. Implement key strategies toward becoming a successful international teleworker. The tax, social security, and other logistical considerations outlined in this book are specific to an American citizen employee working outside of the United States. However, the general questions to ask, the steps toward developing a proposal, the items to negotiate, and recommended teleworking strategies are applicable to almost anyone looking to move to a foreign country.

Book Description

Book Description
A leading urban economist's hopeful study of how shifts to remote work can change all of our lives for the better. As COVID-19 descended upon the country in 2020, millions of American office workers transitioned to working from home to reduce risk of infection and prevent spread of the virus. In the aftermath of this shift, a significant number of workers remain at least partially remote. It is clear that this massive experiment we were forced to run will have long-term consequences, changing the shape of our personal and work lives, as well as the urban landscape around us. How will the rise of telecommuting affect workers' quality of life, the profitability of firms, and the economic geography of our cities and suburbs? Going Remote addresses the uncertainties and possibilities of this moment. In Going Remote, urban economist Matthew E. Kahn takes readers on a journey through the new remote-work economy, revealing how people will configure their lives when they have more freedom to choose where they work and how they live. Melding ideas from labor economics, family economics, the theory of the firm, and urban economics, Kahn paints a realistic picture of the future for workers, firms, and urban areas, big and small. As Kahn shows, the rise of remote work presents especially valuable opportunities for flexibility and equity in the lives of women, minorities, and young people, and even for those whose jobs do not allow them to work from home. Uncovering key implications for our quality of life, Going Remote demonstrates how the rise of remote work can significantly improve the standard of living for millions of people by expanding personal freedom, changing the arc of how we live, work, and play.

Book Description
This timely book examines the changing nature of telework and offers a fresh approach to and understanding of this rapidly spreading phenomenon. Spurred by developing information and communication technologies, new forms of work organization, and changing attitudes at the workplace, teleworking is quickly expanding into a great variety of flexible working arrangements. The High Road to Teleworking explains the variables behind this expansion and considers the technological, social, company and economic factors at stake. The study also discusses the new geography of teleworking and the issue of teleworkers reaching the critical mass in various countries around the world, explores the needs for new regulation, and highlights future policy options. Particular attention is paid to the topics of employment, quality of life, and work issues including the risks of techno-stress and gender-related constrains and opportunities.
