Book Description
Excerpt from Technala, 1917, Vol. 10: No; III and IV These kittens have reminded me of some of the girls in our school. These girls are just as weak and helpless as the kittens. They, just as the kittens, are placed out by themselves with the idea of a goal to be reached. When they enter school they have to depend upon someone else to decide upon the course of study for them to pursue. After the direction for them to take has been decided by someone else, they are still helpless be cause they are too weak to travel their courses alone. They struggle, but without suc cess. As a result, they write their themes and make their grades by leaning upon some one else. Finally, their goal is reached, but are they any stronger for having made the journey? No. When their supports leave them, they are just as helpless as they were When they first came into the school. Virginia bristow, '17. Fundamentals of Media Effects
Author: Jennings Bryant
Publisher: Waveland Press
ISBN: 1478608196
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 425
Book Description
Mass medias potential to influence audience beliefs and behavior is a subject that has long fascinated scholars and the general public. The ongoing interest and concern are reflected in the common tendency to blame the media for many of societys problems. This extensively revised and updated edition cuts through popular notions of presumed effects to provide a balanced, informed, up-to-date treatment of the media effects literature. The clear, compelling presentation, illuminated by dozens of new photographs, equips readers with a fundamental understanding of the history, theoretical underpinnings, and current status of media effects researchknowledge that will help them navigate in a media-saturated environment. Several outstanding elements distinguish the Second Edition of Fundamentals of Media Effects. New chapters explore the impact of computer/video games, the effects of the Internet and social networking sites, and the way mobile communication devices have transformed the way we live. An extensive new chapter on childrens educational television describes the considerable body of research that supports positive effects like language development and flexible-thinking skills. Framing studies are covered in a separate chapter where they are distinguished both theoretically and experimentally from agenda setting and priming. Finally, the authors provide overviews of classic and current research studies in an invaluable feature called Research Spotlight, which enable readers to envision how theories translate into research.

Montevallo
Author: Clark Hultquist
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439641706
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
Montevallo: a mountain in a valley. This bucolic, natural phrase aptly describes the beauty of this central Alabama town. Early settlers were drawn to the area by its abundant agricultural and mineral resources, and in 1826, the tiny village of Montevallo was born. The nature of the town changed significantly in 1896 with the founding of the Alabama Girls Industrial School, now the University of Montevallo. The Olmsted Brothers firm of Brookline, Massachusetts, laid out the central campus, and its master plan still inspires current development. Since 1896, the focus of the town has shifted from agriculture and mining to education. The universitys mission is to be Alabamas Public Liberal Arts College. Prominent figures include writer and veteran E. B. Sledge, actresses Polly Holliday and Rebecca Luker, and Major League Baseball player Rusty Greer.
