Book Description
Excerpt from Teaching With Films Those who are teaching with films, not merely show ing pictures but skillfully using motion pictures, slide films, and slides as instructional tools, are in the van guard of today's Educational March. They are armed with one of the most effective teaching aids yet devised. It is the purpose of this book to help those who are less experienced in the use of films for instruction, not those who have pioneered and developed the film as a teaching aid. Who should use films for instruction? Why should instructional films be used? What is a good teaching film? Where are films and equipment to be obtained? When is the right time to use a film for instruction? How do you teach with films? These are some of the questions answered. There are suggestions for the person who would like to make his own instructional film, advice on the care and operation of projection equipment, tips on storage and repair of films, informa tion on the organization and administration of an audio visual aids program for instruction, and comments on financing such a program. Book Description
Film studies has been a part of higher education curricula in the United States almost since the development of the medium. Although the study of film is dispersed across a range of academic departments, programs, and scholarly organizations, film studies has come to be recognized as a field in its own right. In an era when teaching and scholarship are increasingly interdisciplinary, film studies continues to expand and thrive, attracting new scholars and fresh ideas, direction, and research. Given the dynamism of the field, experienced and beginning instructors alike need resources for bringing the study of film into the classroom. This volume will help instructors conceptualize contemporary film studies in pedagogical terms. The first part of the volume features essays on theory and on representation, including gender, race, and sexuality. Contributors then examine the geographies of cinema and offer practical suggestions for structuring courses on national, regional, and transnational film. Several essays focus on interdisciplinary approaches, while others describe courses designed around genre (film noir, the musical), mode (animation, documentary, avant-garde film), or the formal elements of film, such as sound, music, and mise-en-scene. The volume closes with a section on film and media in the digital age, in which contributors discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by access to resources, media convergence, and technological developments in the field.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Report to Educators on Teaching Films Survey Late in 1945 several thousand school administrators and teachers cooperated with the seven publishers named on the title page of this booklet by answering elaborate motion-picture questionnaires prepared by Carroll Y. Belknap, consultant in management research. The purpose of the study to which these questionnaires contributed was succinctly stated on the printed questionnaires themselves: ..". to evaluate the effectiveness of the visual aids now available and to explore more fully the possibilities of correlation between film production and textbook publication. The subjects of the study are of fundamental importance to American education. Thus, in the truest sense, this study is being conducted for the benefit of the schools themselves, as well as for that of the sponsoring publishers." We here tell you the story of the study of certain aspects of audio-visual education made by Mr. Belknap for our group of seven publishers and of experimental work done by us in cooperation with the Motion Picture Association. American education contributed to both. We are, therefore, making available to the thousands of teachers and school administrators who helped in the survey this brief account of our activities together with a summary of results. Upon application, single copies of this document will be sent gratis to interested persons until the edition is exhausted. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Use the Educational Sound Film In the face of these conditions, the words curriculum and method become exceedingly significant and the edu cator must be constantly on the alert for more efficient teaching processes and more effective learning implements. With so much to be learned, time becomes of the essence. With the pattern of the modern world becoming increasingly complex and with the human mind constantly battering away at the ramparts of the infinite, the learner cannot spend his time muddling with details when he should be dealing with the overview, nor can he expect to comprehend the pattern of life unless he can trace its warp and woof, infinitely fine though they may be. So it is that the schools must ever be devising better ways of teaching and learning, better instruments for translating vicarious experience as nearly as possible into reality. Some times the educator creates his own devices. Again, he adopts and adapts the discoveries and inventions of others. So it was with printing, with the radio, and with the talking picture. Book Description
Excerpt from Film and Education: A Symposium on the Role of the Film in the Field of Education This book has but one major purpose - to present within the useful limits of one volume a comprehensive survey of the present and potential uses of the 16 mm educational motion picture in our modern society. It is a task which defies any single writer; the variety of film uses and the experience required to write about them are beyond the ability of one individual. For this reason, The Film and Education is the deliberate product of thirty-seven writers, each one discussing a phase of educational film use with which he is most thoroughly familiar. It should be emphasized at the beginning that the word "education" is used here in its broader sense - i.e., "the acquisition of knowledge or skill." It is a connotation of the word which encompasses both schooling and training, whether formal or informal, whether in school or out of school. It relates to that acquisition of knowledge and skill which occurs in school, factory, business, church, or in any one of a dozen or more aspects of everyday life. The term "educational film," therefore, as used in this book, refers to the motion picture in any and all of its uses where it intended to inform, orient, or motivate its audience to some useful end. In this sense, the educational film includes such categories as teaching film, business film, informational film, documentary film, religious film, training film, sales film, and many more. If this book seems to give an undue amount of space to uses of the film in the schoolroom, it is because film applications in that area are more particularized and the research and writing more definitive.
