Each year, WHO publishes estimates of TB disease burden (incidence and mortality) at global, regional and country level, covering the period from 2000 until the latest complete calendar year, in the annual WHO Global TB Report. Estimates of the incidence of drug-resistant TB specifically were added to the report in 2016, with a focus on rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB). Since 2006, estimates of TB disease burden have been produced using standard methods that are periodically reviewed by the WHO Global Task Force on TB Impact Measurement. The purpose of the meeting was an up-to-date review by the Task Force of methods being used by WHO to produce estimates of TB disease burden, with a focus on two major topics: (i) Methods for producing estimates of TB incidence and mortality in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic; (ii) Methods for producing estimates of the incidence of drug-resistant TB, with a focus on estimates of the incidence of rifampicin resistance.

"This report is a short update to the WHO report on global tuberculosis (TB) control that was published in March 2009, based on data collected from July to September 2009. It is designed to fill an 18-month gap between the full reports of 2009 (in March) and 2010 (in October), following changes to the production cycle of the report in 2009 that have been made to ensure that future reports in the series contain more up-to-date data. The report includes the latest (2008) estimates of the global burden of TB (incidence, prevalence and mortality). It also includes an assessment of progress in implementing the Stop TB Strategy and the Global Plan to Stop TB, which in combination have set out what needs to be done to achieve the 2015 global targets for TB control. These targets are that incidence should be falling by 2015 (MDG Target 6.c) and that prevalence and mortality rates should be halved by 2015 compared with their level in 1990. The latest data (up to 2010) on financing for TB control are presented, and progress towards the 2015 targets at global and regional level is analysed. There have been calls to revisit the experiences of TB screening campaigns that were widely applied in Europe and North America in the mid-20th century, as well as more recent experiences with TB screening in countries with a high burden of the disease, and to assess their possible relevance for TB care and prevention in the 21st century. In response, WHO has developed guidelines on screening for active TB. An extensive review of the evidence has been undertaken. The review suggests that screening, if done in the right way and targeting the right people, may reduce suffering and death, but the review also highlights several reasons to be cautious. As discussed in detail in this book, there is a need to balance potential benefits against the risks and costs of screening; this conclusion is mirrored by the history of TB screening. This publication presents the first comprehensive assessment by WHO of the appropriateness of screening for active TB since the recommendations made in 1974 by the Expert Committee. However, the relative effectiveness and cost effectiveness of screening remain uncertain, a point that is underscored by the systematic reviews presented in this guideline. Evidence suggests that some risk groups should always be screened, whereas the prioritization of other risk groups as well as the choice of screening approach depend on the epidemiology, the health-system context, and the resources available. This book sets out basic principles for prioritizing risk groups and choosing a screening approach; it also emphasizes the importance of assessing the epidemiological situation, adapting approaches to local situations, integrating TB screening into other health-promotion activities, minimizing the risk of harm to individuals, and engaging in continual monitoring and evaluation. It calls for more and better research to assess the impact of screening and to develop and evaluate new screening tests and approaches.
