Book Description
Experimental results and analysis of a test series to evaluate the transient void fraction development in a partially filled, externally heated horizontal cylinder. The work was undertaken as part of a research program concerned with the safe transport of flammable pressure liquidified gases. Two experiments were performed in an externally heated (80 kWe) R11 filled, 380 mm diameter horizontal cylinder protected with a 9.53 mm diameter pressure relief valve set for 343 kPa; one with a lading of 50% and the other at 75% by volume. Selected time-dependent temperatures, pressures, mass and hulk fluid, and boundary layer void fraction development were measured. An analytical model based on the conservation of mass and energy in the 2-phase mixture layer was made and compared to the flux drift model.

Tank Car Thermal Response Analysis, Vol. 3

Book Description
In order to make the shipping of hazardous industrial fluids safer, a complete understanding of the actual phenomena inside tank cars under external fire conditions is necessary. This report presents the results of a study to obtain vapour heat transfer coefficients of a partially filled horizontal cylinder with and without an internal protection system (EXPLOSAFE) under simulated fire conditions, using a constant electrical power input. Wall and vapour temperatures as well as pressure histories as a function of time were obtained for a partially filled horizontal cylinder of Freon-11. Heating of the vessel from 10-65 kW/sq m, with 3 liquid levels (76, 58 and 23%) and 2 pressure relief valve orifice diameters (6.4 mm and 9.5 mm) permitted fluid behaviour observation and estimation of the vapour space heat transfer coefficients.
