Book Description
Guy Martin can't sit still. He has to keep pushing - both himself and whatever machine he is piloting - to the extreme. He's a doer, not a talker. That applies whether Guy's competing in a self-supported 750-mile mountain bike race across Arizona, or trying to reach 300mph in a standing mile on the 800-horsepower motorbike he built in his shed. And during his TV adventures, travelling through Japan, winning records for the world's fastest tractor, re-creating the famous Steve McQueen Great Escape jump, discovering the toil and sacrifice of the D-Day landings and trying to cut the mustard as a Battle of Britain pilot. Guy's become a dad now and he's hoping that one day his daughter will grow up to be a better welder than he is. Oh, and he's still getting up at 5am to work on trucks in for service or to be out on his tractor, working the Lincolnshire land he's always called home. This is Guy Martin's latest book, in his own words, on the last four years of his life that make the rest of us look like we're in slow motion. We're here for a good time, not a long time. To Guy, if it's worth doing, it's worth dying for.

Book Description
In March 1967, a Cessna 195 flew from Oregon towards San Francisco carrying a family of three: Alvin Oien, Sr. (the pilot), his wife Phyllis and step-daughter Carla Corbus. Due to worse-than-predicted weather, it went down in the Trinity Mountains of California only eight miles from a highway and beneath a busy commercial airway. This was before radio-beacon type emergency locators were required equipment for airplanes; the family survived the crash for almost two months but the ruggednessof the terrain and the fact that they were far off their intended course made finding them by sight impossible. Searchers determined the weather in the mountains also made living impossible after a period of time had passed. Half a year later, the eventual finding of the wreck by hunters shocked the nation. A diary and series of letters from the survivors explained their predicament. These Oien family documents as well as photos of the family and from the search are included in the story. This tragedy spurred political action towards the mandatory Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) that are carried aboard all U.S. civil aircraft. ELT radios have saved thousands of lives since they were mandated and their technology continues to improve and find more lost people. Pilots who read this story will never fly without a flight plan, survival gear, or a working ELT. In aviation, we say the regulations are "written in blood." This compelling story is the "blood" behind the ELT regulations. While indeed tragic, the Oien family's legacy has a brighter side: Their story led directly to this effective legislation of requirements for the airplane locators that have since saved so many lives in search-and-rescue operations. Their complete story is now told for the first time -- the "Carla Corbus Diary" is uncovered here along with the family letters that accompanied it, never before published in full.

Book Description
195 Centre Street: It’s summertime, and the kitchen windows are open and a warm, gentle breeze is blowing the spotless white lace curtains into the room. P-51 Mustangs: In my opinion, it’s the most perfect airplane ever to take to the skies. And, Me: I never “wanted to be a writer”. I wanted to be a pilot, and fly P-51 Mustangs like Don Gentile, and Ratsy Preddy. So, I took a flying lesson, and found I really didn’t like flying. My Life-Long Dream of Being a Pilot shattered, the next day I wrote my first Award-Winning newspaper column, and, it was published. Yeah, right... I began writing this book in 2015, putting together some ruminations and reflections. I slowly added to it over the years: new things I wrote, old things I discovered I had written, some things that other people wrote that made me laugh out loud, or, knocked my socks off. Welcome to: 195 Centre Street, Buchanan, New York, U.S.A. P-51 Mustangs, B-17’s, B-24’s, B-25’s, PBY’s, F-82’s. Auschwitz, Birkenau, Vietnam, 9/11. Terciera in the Azores, Montecatini Alto in Tuscany and Rodney Bay on Saint Lucia. A 1936 Ford Five-Window Coupe and a 1963 Sting Ray Split-Window Coupe. Walking from Maine to Georgia—twice—on the world-famous Appalachian Trail. Allesandro Botticelli, Les Mis, Chateau Petrus. “Winning”, paper clips, and farts. And, A Thousand (Or So) Things You Don’t Know About Heart Attacks...
