Book Description
Excerpt from Tales of Ancient Greece The Tales collected in this volume have, with one exception, appeared in the 'Tales from Greek Mythology, ' 'The Gods and Heroes, ' and 'Tales of Thebes and Argos.' The 'Tales from Greek Mythology' were written for the use of young children. It has been found necessary to modify a few of these stories, to bring them nearer to the level of the rest. The story of the 'Vengeance of Odysseus' has been added to complete the series of legends from the Odyssey, so as to give some idea of that poem as a whole. In place of the longer introductions prefixed to the 'Gods and Heroes' and to the 'Tales of Thebes and Argos, ' a new introduction is given, tracing each story to its earliest form, and resolving it into its original elements. I have here placed before the reader results rather than proofs. Recent discussions on the subject seem to justify the conviction that the foundations of the science of Comparative Mythology have been firmly laid, and that its method is unassailable. Book Description
Excerpt from Tales of the Enchanted Islands of the Atlantic Hawthorne in his Wonder Book has described the beautiful Greek myths and traditions, but no one has yet made similar use of the wondrous tales that gathered for more than a thousand years about the islands of the Atlantic deep. Although they are a part of the mythical period of Ameri can history, these hazy legends were altogether disdained by the earlier historians; indeed, George Bancroft made it a matter of actual pride that the beginning of the American annals was bare and literal. But in truth no national history has been less prosaic as to its earlier traditions, because every visitor had to cross the sea to reach it, and the sea has always been, by the mystery of its horizon, the fury of its storms, and the variable ness of the atmosphere above it, the foreordained land of romance. Book Description
Excerpt from Tales of Aegean Intrique If these stories should serve as an incitement to every pater-familias actual or potential to address to his children an Apologia pro Vita Sud 1914-1918, otherwise called An Account of what Daddy did in the Great War they would set, I confess, a pernicious example: the world itself could not contain the books that should be written, or, what is worse, the public would not stomach them. And so, if I venture upon a narrative of some of my doings, my justification is that my experiences have been largely peculiar to myself and not a replica of those which tens of thousands of others can recount, and my work that of a comparatively free agent rather than of one unit in a controlled and disciplined mass. For, let me avow it at once, my part in the war cannot be deemed, in the common acceptance, warlike: I have not been under fire; I have not encountered submarine or mine; I have not so much as seen an enemy in uniform and at large.
