Book Description
From the invention of the electric telegraph to the emergence of the Internet, new technology has constantly stimulated our desire for information. Nowhere is that desire more intense than in the world's financial trading community, where survival depends as never before on instant and continuous access to market prices and market- moving news. The creation of that community, by a handful of pioneering information companies, is the subject of this book. Its author spent a lifetime working for three of them, an improbably colorful career that took him from newsroom copy-boy to boardroom chief executive. From Morse to Murdoch, he explores the role of human foibles in the rise and fall of business enterprises within this hugely influential branch of electronic media, delivering along the way riotous anecdotes that include drinking, drugs, fist fights and sexual scandals. In an industry scarcely past its adolescence, multi-billion companies can flourish or founder on the whim of ego. Carefully researched, and peopled with some of the most extraordinary characters to appear outside the realms of fiction, Tales from the South Pier is part history and part autobiography. Above all, it is a riveting read.

Book Description
Michael Nelson was General Manager of Reuters. He was one of the principal architects of Reuters development of computerised financial information, which caused a revolution in world markets.Castro and Stockmaster is Michael’s fascinating memoir and covers his time with Reuters when he travelled throughout the world and met many heads of state. The most extraordinary meeting was the night he and his wife spent in Havana with Fidel Castro, President of Cuba, which had a remarkable dénouement, recounted here for the first time. The son of a carpenter, Michael read history at Magdalen College, Oxford before joining Reuters as a trainee. He was initially posted to Asia. He was made the global head of Reuters economic services in London at the age of 33. In 1964 Nelson acquired the rights outside North America to an American system of computerised financial information called Stockmaster. Reuters computerised financial information services transformed the fortunes of the company and the newspapers that owned it. The proceeds of the public offering of Reuter shares in 1984 gave new life to British newspapers, enabling many in Fleet Street to move to well equipped premises in Docklands.Michael’s memoir will appeal to anyone interested in the media and international finance and is a unique account of the development of Reuters over the last 60 years.Profits from the sales of this book will go to the charity SOS Children, Pakistan. The donation is in recognition of the taxi driver who saved Michael’s life in Karachi when he was attacked in an anti-British riot during the Suez crisis.

Book Description
For Native peoples of California, the abalone found along the state’s coast have remarkably complex significance as food, spirit, narrative symbol, tradable commodity, and material with which to make adornment and sacred regalia. The large mollusks also represent contemporary struggles surrounding cultural identity and political sovereignty. Abalone Tales, a collaborative ethnography, presents different perspectives on the multifaceted material and symbolic relationships between abalone and the Ohlone, Pomo, Karuk, Hupa, and Wiyot peoples of California. The research agenda, analyses, and writing strategies were determined through collaborative relationships between the anthropologist Les W. Field and Native individuals and communities. Several of these individuals contributed written texts or oral stories for inclusion in the book. Tales about abalone and their historical and contemporary meanings are related by Field and his coauthors, who include the chair and other members of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe; a Point Arena Pomo elder; the chair of the Wiyot tribe and her sister; several Hupa Indians; and a Karuk scholar, artist, and performer. Reflecting the divergent perspectives of various Native groups and people, the stories and analyses belie any presumption of a single, unified indigenous understanding of abalone. At the same time, they shed light on abalone’s role in cultural revitalization, struggles over territory, tribal appeals for federal recognition, and connections among California’s Native groups. While California’s abalone are in danger of extinction, their symbolic power appears to surpass even the environmental crises affecting the state’s vulnerable coastline.

Book Description
From the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Sophie’s Choice: three novellas of a young writer’s journey to adulthood. In Love Day, twenty-year-old Paul Whitehurst is a Marine lieutenant during World War II, waiting to land on Okinawa, wrestling with anxiety and memories of his boyhood in Virginia. In Shadrach, ten-year-old Paul witnesses his neighbors as they welcome a guest: a ninety-nine-year-old former slave who has walked nine hundred miles from Alabama so that he may die on the land of his childhood owner. And in A Tidewater Morning, Paul is thirteen and struggling to deal with his mother’s impending death from cancer. Together in one volume, each of these affecting semiautobiographical novellas from the author of such literary classics as the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Confessions of Nat Turner and the memoir Darkness Visible, weaves together the transformative experiences of Whitehurst’s early life with William Styron’s signature deep historical insight, underscoring how the significance of the past informs the present. As the Los Angeles Times notes, it is “one of Styron’s finest works. . . . The beauty and humanity of the Southern tradition are evoked vividly.” This ebook features a new illustrated biography of William Styron, including original letters, rare photos, and never-before-seen documents from the Styron family and the Duke University Archives.
