Book Description
Excerpt from Tales From Ten Poets, Vol. 1 of 3 There is a deep-grained love in humanity for a story pure and simple. The fireside gossip who dishes up the sweet morsels of the past, has little art at his command. He can give nothing save the bare skeleton of a tradition, a tragedy, or a bit of drollery. His are the broadest and ruggedest of touches, and he has gained his end and pleased his audience if he has only sketched, in boldest outline, facts whose interest lies solely in themselves and their relative arrangement. Art, however, is quite another and a nobler thing. The simple facts which jut up from human intercourse like rough boulders, become, after a while, covered and softened with the foliage and minute mosses of art. The prosaic outlines pass away into something no less true, but lovelier and finer. The rock beneath gives endurance. The grass above brings appealing beauty, and this renders the endurance forever precious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Tales, Vol. 1 But if these characters which seemed to be at my disposal were not such as would coalesce into one body, nor were of a nature to he commanded by one mind, so neither on examination did they appear as an unconnected multitude, accidentally. Collected, to be suddenly dispersed but rather beings of whom might be formed groups and smaller societies, the relations of whose adven tures and pursuits might bear that kind of simi-i litude to an Heroic Poem, which these minor as sociations of men (as pilgrims on the way to their saint, or parties in search of amusement, travellers excited by chriosity, or adventurers in pursuit of gain) have in points of connection and importance with a regular and disciplined Army. Book Description
Excerpt from Tales and Novels, Vol. 1 of 2: In Verse Jean De La Fontaine was born in the year 1621, at Chateau Thierry, where his family held a good position. After receiving an imperfect education at home and at Rheims, the young La Fontaine, at the age of twenty, entered the Seminary of the Oratorians, but left it in eighteen months to lead an idle and irregular life at home. It is said that his native talent was first roused by the recitation of an ode of Malherbe, and, pursuing his poetical studies, he acquired knowledge of the great writers of classical times, reading Homer, Plato, Virgil, Horace, in addition to the two authors who perhaps influenced him wore directly - Terence and Ph drus. The works of Rabelais and Boccaccio furnished him with materials and suggestions for many of his stories, and he borrowed largely from them.
