Book Description
Today's best practice in environmental mine-waste management requires a thorough understanding of the wastes produced. The knowledge of mine wastes represents a new interdisciplinary science and this book provides an introductory, descriptive and analytic overview of the wastes produced in the mineral industry. It describes the characterization, prediction, monitoring, disposal and treatment as well as environmental impacts. Intended for undergraduate courses, it systematically builds the reader’s understanding and knowledge of the wastes produced, their physical and chemical characteristics, and how to deal responsibly with them on a short and long-term basis. The text employs 22 case studies spanning the world’s mineral industry that elucidate best practice and specific challenges in mine-waste management and site rehabilitation.

Book Description
The safe and environmentally responsible management of mine tailings and waste rock remains one of the most challenging issues facing mine owners and operators. Despite recent developments in tailings management that utilise thickening to higher solids contents than was previously possible, the vast majority of tailings streams are still managed using conventional techniques. These conventional techniques transport and deposit tailings at relatively low solids contents, resulting in the need to manage sometimes large volumes of water safely and economically. There have also been a number of catastrophic failures of conventional tailings storage facilities reported in the literature over the past two to three decades, and the issue of risk identification and minimisation is central to the responsible stewardship of mining waste. This seminar provided a timely opportunity to take stock of current procedures and techniques for minimising the risks that are inherent to the management of mine tailings. Containing 41 papers from around the world, representing a range of analysis, design, operation and management of tailings storage facilities were presented. The related issue of managing waste rock was addressed in a number of presentations, covering topics ranging from the design of appropriate landforms to the achievement of sustainable closure options. The papers in these proceedings will be useful to practitioners in the field of mine waste management, representing the current state-of-the-art in this field, as well as providing indications of likely future developments.

Book Description
As long as we have mining and mineral processing, tailings and the responsible management thereof will remain at the forefront, with a company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance in part a reflection of how well tailings risks are being managed. The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) was published in August 2020, aiming to prevent catastrophic failure of tailings facilities by providing operators with specified measures and approaches throughout the mine life cycle, taking into account multiple stakeholder perspectives. In 2021, the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) published the Tailings Management: Good Practice Guide intended to support safe, responsible management of tailings across the global mining industry, providing guidance on good governance and engineering practices to support continual improvement in tailings storage facility (TSF) management and help foster and strengthen the safety culture of mining companies. The Tailings Management Handbook is important and timely because there is no other comprehensive resource rooted in these new fundamentals and global principles for tailings management. Tailings management requires interdisciplinary and cross-functional understanding and support, which is apparent throughout this handbook. Dive into the wealth of information contributed by more than 100 world-renowned experts, beautifully crafted into a full-color handbook that focuses on the basics, life-cycle planning, site and tailings characterization, TSF design and construction, as well as systems and operations of TSFs. The inclusion of 42 case studies is an added plus with real-world successes and lessons learned.
