Book Description
Since their initial accidental synthesis and characterization in Scotland in the late 1920s, there has been a strong research focus on the use of phthalocyanines (Pcs) as dyes and pigments. In recent years, active research fields have included their use in electrophotography, photovoltaic and solar cells, molecular electronics, Langmuir-Blodgett films, photosensitizers, electrochromic display devices, gas sensors, liquid crystals, low-dimensional conductors, and optical disks. Phthalocyanines possess interesting biological, electronic, optical, catalytic, and structural properties. The main disadvantage is their insolubility in common solvents due to strong intermolecular - interactions. The solubility of phthalocyanines can be increased by various methods such as the formation of anionic and cationic species and both axial and peripheral substitution. Substitution at the nonperipheral and peripheral positions of the benzo moieties usually enhances their solubility in organic solvents. The most important advantage of phthalocyanines compared to porphyrins is that their Q bands lie at longer wavelengths and are considerably more intense. In this book, you will find synthesis and some applications of various phthalocyanine derivatives.

Book Description
A series of Pc 4 related compounds consisting of OH-substituted derivatives, Pc 4 salts and Pc 4 OH-substituted derivative salts has been prepared. The salts have been synthesized by straightforward acid-base reactions. Solubility studies of the Pc 4, the OH-substituted derivatives, the Pc 4 salts and the OH-substituted derivative salts in representative organic solvents and in aqueous dispersant-containing solutions have been carried out. Different dosage forms of Pc 4 including a liquid salt, aqueous solutions, a mineral oil solution, gels, a cream, and water-swellable films have been formulated. In addition, membrane penetration studies of the formulation of Pc 4 used in a completed Phase I clinical trial done at University Hospitals of Cleveland have been conducted. Polyurethane, cellulose, polyvinylidene fluoride, silicone, pig keratome, and human roof blister membranes have been used in the study. In unrelated work, the known polymers, chrysotile-derived trimethylsiloxy scroll polymer, and chrysotile-derived vinyldimethylsiloxy scroll polymer have been made. Also, the new polymers chrysotile-derived trimethylsiloxy-3-cyanopropylmethylmethoxysiloxy scroll polymer and chrysotile-derived vinyldimethylsiloxy-3-cyanopropylmethylmethoxysiloxy scroll polymer, have been made by a novel pendent group-exchange reaction. Finally, partially platinum-filled scrolls have been prepared.

Book Description
In this important volume, the structures and functions of these advanced polymer and composite systems are evaluated with respect to improved or novel performance, and the potential implications of those developments for the future of polymer-based composites and multifunctional materials are discussed. It focuses exclusively on the latest research related to polymer and composite materials, especially new trends in frontal polymerization and copolymerization synthesis, functionalization of polymers, physical properties, and hybrid systems. Several chapters are devoted to composites and nanocomposites.

Book Description
Melding basic and clinical science, this reference provides a comprehensive overview of the roles that biophysics, photochemistry, and computational modeling play in the biomedical applications of fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging. Penned by pioneering researchers, the Handbook of Biomedical Fluorescence discusses fundamental aspects of fluorescence generation in organic molecules within tissue, theoretical and experimental views of how light propagation in tissue can be used to interpret fluorescence signals, endogenous and exogenous fluorescence agents in medical or basic research studies, and radiation transport, diffusion theory, and the Monte Carlo method.

Book Description
The fIrst edition of the Science 0/ Photobiology edited by Kendric C. Smith (plenum Press, 1977) was a comprehensive textbook of photobiology, devoting a chapter to each of the subdisciplines of the fIeld. At the end of many of these chapters there were brief descriptions of simple experiments that students could perform to demonstrate the principles discussed. In the succeeding years some photobiologists felt that a more complete publica tion of experiments in photobiology would be a useful teaching tool. Thus, in the 1980s the American Society for Photobiology (ASP) attempted to produce a laboratory manual in photobiology. Cognizant of these efforts, Kendric Smith elected to publish the second edition of The Science o/Photobiology (1989) without experiments; anticipating the comple tion of the ASP laboratory manual. Unfortunately, the initial ASP efforts met with limited success, and several years were to pass before a photobiology laboratory manual became a reality. One of the major stumbling blocks to production of an accurate and reliable laboratory manual was the requirement that the experiments be tested, not just by the author who is familiar with the techniques, but by students who may be quite new to photobiology. How could this be accomplished with limited resources? Many ideas were considered and discarded, before a workable solution was found. The catalyst that enabled the careful screening of all experiments in this book was a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) devoted entirely to this purpose.

Book Description
The fullerene molecule with its unique structure of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a soccer ball structure is a molecule of great potential for a variety of applications and has drawn attention of lots of physicists, chemists and engineers. Recently, these nanostructures have also been studied for their biological activities with a view towards using them for biomedical applications. One of the possible therapies for which fullerenes may have a real medical application is the light based therapy called photodynamic therapy (PDT), which is a non-surgical, minimally invasive approach that has been used in the treatment of solid tumors and many non-malignant diseases.
