Book Description
"Ludwig tells powerful stories about places, people and environmental issues. He narrates with unfl inching honesty his experiences investigating and tracking down the culprits in continuing environmental contamination. He rises to meet the beauty and grace of the Great Lakes with lively tales of decades out on their waters as a researcher. This book is an indispensable part of the Great Lakes literary canon." Dave Dempsey, author of "On the Brink: The Great Lakes in the 21st Century" and "The Blanchard Connection". "Ludwig has written a monumental compendium about the largest source of fresh water in the world, a life support system whose function he reveals has been under siege. It refl ects what happened as peer reviewed science, public health, and common sense were set aside and corporate-creep infected the chambers where policy decisions are made. It also parallels the same problem where humanity is now under siege from a growing list of epidemics of endocrine-related disorders the problem fi rst reported by Ludwig and his cronies back in the early 80s." Book Description
In the 19th century, as population and industry expanded in the Great Lakes region, and along other waterways adjacent to the international border, Canada and the United States began to encounter serious issues with respect to sharing the transboundary waters and the pollution of these waters. [...] The basic role of the IJC is to prevent and resolve disputes between the United States of America and Canada under the auspices of the Boundary Waters Treaty and pursue the common good of both countries as an independent and objective adviser to the two governments. [...] In the Great Lakes region, the IJC has a critical role in evaluating efforts by both countries to protect and restore the Great Lakes basin ecosystem and recommending actions to the two federal governments to implement the goals and objectives of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA). [...] The following section provides a more detailed review of the history and content of the agreement and illustrates the application of the principles of interjurisdictional agreements as listed earlier. [...] There is clear recognition by the IJC and by other groups and agencies in the Great Lakes region that, while the GLWQA remains a key instrument for the restoration and protection of the Great Lakes, the vision, purpose, and many provisions of the agreement need to be updated and/or supplemented in the face of new and emerging environmental and socio-economic issues.

Book Description
The Great Lakes ecosystem is recognised by many as an international natural resource that has been altered by human activities and climate variability. These alterations have led to degraded water quality, diminished habitat, lower native fish and wildlife populations, and an altered ecosystem. In response, the federal governments of the United States and Canada and the state and provincial governments in the Great Lakes basin are implementing several restoration activities. These activities range from mitigating the harmful effects of toxic substances in lake waters to restoring fish habitat. This books provides the reader with a background on and issues of the Great Lakes restoration initiative, as well as the action plan for the years 2010-2014.
