Book Description
We identify conditions under which a summation over nucleon resonances can yield, via quark-hadron duality, parton model results for electromagnetic and neutrino structure functions at large x. While a summation over the lowest even and odd parity multiplets is sufficient to achieve duality in the symmetric quark model, a suppression of transitions to specific final states is required for more realistic cases incorporating SU(6) breaking. We outline several scenarios consistent with duality, discuss their implications for the high Q2 behavior of transition form factors, and illustrate how they can expose the patterns in the flavor-spin dependence of short-distance forces in the strong-QCD limit.

Book Description
One of the activities of the Ettore Majorana Centre for ,Scientific Culture is the international advanced study courses on scientific topics which are of particular relevance today. The Centre is located in Erice, a mountain town in the province of Trapani in Sicily. At present over seventy Schools of the Centre are active, holding annual or biennial courses, so that about forty courses are organized each year. To date some twenty thou sand participants have attended the courses of the various Schools of the Centre. The International Physics Workshop Series has been established to make the contents of the Workshops o'f great topical interest available to those who were unable to attend them. The courses are conducted on an advanced, post-doctoral level. This volume - the proceedings of the session on "Quarks and Hadronic Structure" - is the first of the Series. In September 1975, thirty-three physicists from twenty-one laboratories in nine countries met in Erice to attend the Workshop. The countries represented were: Austria, France, Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The purpose of this Workshop was to bring to gether a group of theorists working on various aspects of the quark structure of hadrons to discuss and critically evaluate the present situation. Professor Morpurgo was given the direction of the Workshop. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him most warmly for having accepted this responsibility and for the success of the Work shop.

Book Description
I review recent developments in quark-hadron duality in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering. Matrix elements of twist-4 operators extracted from moments of the spin-dependent g1 structure function suggest that duality violating higher twists are small above Q2 ≈ 1 GeV2. The x dependence of local duality is analyzed within a quark model framework, and mechanisms are identified for spin-flavor symmetry breaking which underpin the behavior of structure functions at large x.

Book Description
While perturbative QCD methods fully describe experimental results at high energies, and chiral perturbation theory is the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions, a form of duality is observed connecting these two regimes. In these intermediate kinematics, a wide variety of reactions are observed which can be described simultaneously by single particle (quark) scattering, and by exclusive resonance (hadron) scattering. The contributions in this proceedings volume discuss recent and existing results, and aim to foster current and future research, investigating the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. This unique volume contains research work by scientists from different arenas of hadronic physics, dealing with different manifestations of quark-hadron duality.

Book Description
I review recent developments in the study of quark-hadron duality in inclusive electron scattering in the resonance-scaling transition region. Results on matrix elements of twist-4 operators extracted from moments of the spin-dependent g1 structure function suggest that duality violating higher twists are small above Q2 (almost equal to) 1 GeV2. The systematics of the x dependence of local duality are analyzed within a quark model framework, and mechanisms are identified for spin-flavor symmetry breaking which underpin the behavior of structure functions at large x.

Book Description
This proceedings volume collected papers presented at a recent symposium on Chiral Symmetry in Hadrons and Nuclei — the seventh in a series of international symposia — with an aim of providing a platform for discussions among the experts and an overview of the present status in the hadron and nuclear physics related to the chiral symmetry. The recent past years have seen a remarkable progress towards a unified description of nonperturbative strong interaction phenomena based on the fundamental theory of the strong interaction, Quantum ChromoDynamics, and Effective Field Theories. The topics discussed in these proceedings include: chiral and heavy-quark spin symmetry; chiral dynamics of few-body hadron systems; chiral symmetry and hadrons in a nuclear medium; chiral dynamics in nucleon-nucleon interaction and atomic nuclei; chiral symmetry in rotating nuclei; hadron structure and interactions; exotic hadrons, heavy flavor hadrons and nuclei; mesonic atoms and nuclei.

Book Description
Inclusive electron-proton and electron-deuteron inelastic cross sections have been measured at Jefferson Lab (JLab) in the resonance region, at large Bjorken x, up to 0.92, and four-momentum transfer squared Q2 up to 7.5 GeV2 in the experiment E00-116. These measurements are used to extend to larger x and Q2 precision, quantitative, studies of the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. Our analysis confirms, both globally and locally, the apparent violation of quark-hadron duality previously observed at a Q2 of 3.5 GeV2 when resonance data are compared to structure function data created from CTEQ6M and MRST2004 parton distribution functions (PDFs). More importantly, our new data show that this discrepancy saturates by Q2 ~ 4 Gev2, becoming Q2 independent. This suggests only small violations of Q2 evolution by contributions from the higher-twist terms in the resonance region which is confirmed by our comparisons to ALEKHIN and ALLM97. We conclude that the unconstrained strength of the CTEQ6M and MRST2004 PDFs at large x is the major source of the disagreement between data and these parameterizations in the kinematic regime we study and that, in view of quark-hadron duality, properly averaged resonance region data could be used in global QCD fits to reduce PDF uncertainties at large x.
