Book Description
The Sword of the Lord is the first book to examine military chaplains and the development of the military chaplaincy across history and geography - from the first to the twenty-first century, from Europe to North America. The scope of this work reveals the astonishing fact that the military chaplaincy has existed in a recognizable form for more than 1600 years. Contributors analyze specific historical moments in the development of the chaplaincy, beginning in antiquity and progressing through the Crusades, the English Civil War, the American Civil War, both World Wars, and the Vietnam War. Four key themes connect the chapters of this book. The first is the basic issue of historical development over time. Where and when did the military chaplaincy begin and how has it changed? A second theme involves the emotionally and spiritually intense relationships that develop between chaplains and the men and women they serve. How have military chaplains dealt with the enormous responsibility of ministering to soldiers about to kill or possibly be killed? The third theme is that of chaplains' often precarious position between military and religious authorities. Are military chaplains primaril

Book Description
Background becomes foreground in Moyer Hubbard's creative introduction to the social and historical setting for the letters of the Apostle Paul to churches in Asia Minor and Europe. Hubbard begins each major section with a brief narrative featuring a fictional character in one of the great cities of that era. Then he elaborates on various aspects of the cultural setting related to each particular vignette, discussing the implications of those venues for understanding Paul's letters and applying their message to our lives today. Addressing a wide array of cultural and traditional issues, Hubbard discusses: • religion and superstition • education, philosophy, and oratory • urban society • households and family life in the Greco-Roman world This work is based on the premise that the better one understands the historical and social context in which the New Testament (and Paul's letters) was written, the better one will understand the writings of the New Testament themselves. Passages become clearer, metaphors deciphered, and images sharpened. Teachers, students, and laypeople alike will appreciate Hubbard's unique, illuminating, and well-researched approach to the world of the early church.

Book Description
Musings of a Country Preacher are the internal thoughts exposed by Robert Coward, a minister, sinner, backslider, and recaptured prisoner of God to do his bidding once more. Robert Coward, with his life experiences; including world travels and education in four institutes of higher learning, have given him a perspective on Christian ideology that is unique, eye opening, and quite controversial in today's post modern world. Claiming to be a pre-modern man who holds fast to conservative, fundamental Christianity, Coward tells it like he believes it is and pulls no punches. Not even when it comes to his personal life. Enter the mind of a man who has been to the far reaches of the planet and back; to the highest highs of a life with God, to the lowest lows of what it's like to be a prodigal son that has now returned to his God. His Facebook group site "The Sword of the Lord", was begun to help others in their walk with God, to stand firm when life goes awry, and to not make the same mistakes as he.

Book Description
A dramatic tension confronts every Christian believer and interpreter of Scripture: on the one hand, we encounter images of God commanding and engaging in horrendous violence: one the other hand, we encounter the non-violent teachings and example of Jesus, whose loving, self-sacrificial death and resurrection is held up as the supreme revelation of God’s character in the New Testament. How do we reconcile the tension between these seemingly disparate depictions? Are they even capable of reconciliation? Throughout Christian history, many different answers have been proposed, ranging from the long-rejected explanation that these contrasting depictions are of two entirely different ‘gods’ to recent social and cultural theories of metaphor and narrative representation. The Crucifixion of the Warrior God takes up this dramatic tension and the range of proposed answers in an epic constructive investigation. Over two volumes, renowned theologian and biblical scholar Gregory A. Boyd argues that we must take seriously the full range of Scripture as inspired, including its violent depictions of God. At the same time, we must take just as seriously the absolute centrality of the crucified and risen Christ as the supreme revelation of God. Developing a theological interpretation of Scripture that he labels a “cruciform hermeneutic,” Boyd demonstrates how Scripture’s violent images of God are completely reframed and their violence subverted when they are interpreted through the lens of the cross and resurrection. Indeed, when read through this lens, Boyd argues that these violent depictions can be shown to bear witness to the same self-sacrificial character of God that was supremely revealed on the cross.

Put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still. Jeremiah, xlvii. 6. Would to God that the people of this land wore given the heart to see that God had whet his glittering sword; and in the proper spirit of humiliation to ask at his mouth the question of the Prophet, "() thou sword of the Lord, how long will it he ere thou be quiet ?" Until they do, they shad have no other answer than that which was given to the Prophet: " How can it he quiet, seeing the Lord hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea-shore? there hath lie appointed it." Jer. xlvii. 7. Aye, how can it he quiet, when the land is polluted with iniquity from the great rivet even unto the sea; when ungodliness pervades the people from the humblest walks of life, even to the highest places of power? How can it he quiet when the solemnest duty of the people, that of self-government, is exercised in the midst of the vilest revelry, the shouts of drunkenness and profaneness, entering the ears of the Lord God of sabaoth as their only thanksgiving for the blessings they enjoy?
