Book Description
The study looks closely both at college plans to develop MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and to use the MOOCs from other institutions in their curricula. The report helps its readers to answer questions such as: How many colleges accept credits for taking MOOCs? How many have plans to accept such credits in the future and under what conditions? How are colleges supplementing MOOCs with tutoring, online peer groups and instructors to increase their effectiveness? How many colleges are developing their own MOOCs? How many are approaching the major MOOC vendors? Which vendors are favored? How many colleges are establishing task forces to look into or develop MOOCs and how extensive is this effort in terms of staff time and funding? What is the relationship between MOOC development and use and lecture capture technology? What are colleges doing with the lectures that they are now frequently recording and archiving?

Participants include McGill, the University of Rochester, the Royal Institute of Technology, UCLA, Southern Illinois University, the University of Alabama, the University of Advancing Technology, the University of Manchester, State University of New York at Brockport, Victoria University of Wellington, the University of North Carolina Greensboro, the University of Glasgow and many others. The 76-page report gives detailed data on how colleges are using classroom video, social media, “flipped” classrooms, short and frequent spot quizzes, peer mentors and other strategies to improve their online courses and MOOCs. It also provides data on the kinds and types of MOOCs in development, the timetable for their development, and how they are viewed by their institutional creators. For example, are MOOCs viewed as loss leading “feeders” to the colleges’ traditional or distance education programs.

Book Description
2012, according to the media, was The Year of the MOOC. Massive Open Online Courses were declared to be a revolution in college education. The flow of media coverage hyped MOOCs as either the salvation of a beleaguered educational system or the corrosive agent that would dilute it beyond recognition and value. At the same time, venture funding poured into the coffers of education technology companies intent on cashing in on the newly disrupted higher education market. That investment is reshaping the development of learning and content delivery platforms being marketed to your campus, your faculty, and your students. And rapidly forming partnerships between for-profit firms and universities are providing technology vendors with a powerful vehicle for selling to higher education and inserting themselves into the dialogue about the future of educational content and delivery. But college and university administrators do not have to sit passively by, waiting for the MOOC wave to wash over them. There are still seats at the table for those intent on guiding higher education into the future. Campus leaders would do well to shoulder their way in now, rather than wait for an invitation to help shape that future. MOOCs: Opportunities, Impacts, and Challenges, being a survey of the issues and opportunities associated with Massive Open Online Courses, is an invaluable guide to those responsible for their institution's mission. Armed with the information in this book, you will be able to sort out the substance from the hype in the roiling MOOC debate, and effectively fold the future into the strategic mission of your campus.

Does the library assist in content development and if so to what extent? Does the library play a role in the licensing of copyright videos and other content and what role exactly? How much is being spent on these resources? What resources in terms of manpower and budgets are libraries committing to distance/blended learning students? How are colleges serving students in MOOCS? What kind of information literacy requirements exist for students in distance and blended learning? How are these students taught? What is the role of video and online tutorials? The study looks at a range of many other issues such as marketing library services to distance learning students, the uses of social media, the library presence on the course management system, the uses of eBooks, and many other issues.Data in the report is broken out by college size, type, tuition level, public/private status and geographic scope of the distance learning program. Just a few of the report's many findings are that: 22.22% of MA or PHD granting schools, 25% of research universities, 37.50% of 4-Year degree granting colleges, and 43.75% of community colleges in the sample offer some kind of distance education course in information literacy. 40.54% of those sampled had at least on full time position devoted exclusively to distance learning students. For colleges that had at least one full time staffer, the mean numbers of FTE library positions largely devoted to the needs of distance learning students were: 1.06 for MA/PHD granting institutions, 1.33 for 4-Year degree granting colleges, 1.75 for community colleges, and 2 for research libraries.
