Book Description
Although there are many incidents of injuries in schools, schools usually respond to such injuries after they have occurred. Therefore, assessing the problem of injuries within individual schools may help prevent future injuries. This study described the distribution of injuries among the students and staff at a school for children with developmental disabilities. Injuries in a school were examined using surveillance to determine the extent of the problem. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Injuries to the head and cuts were the most common. Injuries occurred most frequently in the classrooms without equipment being involved. Possible risk factors were determined and analyzed to determine the impact that injuries have on students and staff members in a school for children with developmental disabilities. This list can guide the design of appropriate and feasible changes or interventions to allow for a safer school environment, resulting in reduced amounts of injuries.

World Report on Child Injury Prevention
Author: M. M. Peden
Publisher: World Health Organization
ISBN: 9241563575
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 233
Book Description
Child injuries are largely absent from child survival initiatives presently on the global agenda. Through this report, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund and many partners have set out to elevate child injury to a priority for the global public health and development communities. It should be seen as a complement to the UN Secretary-General's study on violence against children released in late 2006 (that report addressed violence-related or intentional injuries). Both reports suggest that child injury and violence prevention programs need to be integrated into child survival and other broad strategies focused on improving the lives of children. Evidence demonstrates the dramatic successes in child injury prevention in countries which have made a concerted effort. These results make a case for increasing investments in human resources and institutional capacities. Implementing proven interventions could save more than a thousand children's lives a day.--p. vii.

Publisher: National Academies
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 56
Book Description
This report focuses on preventing potentially disabling conditions from developing into disabilities and on minimizing the effects of such conditions on a person's productivity and quality of life. It describes disability as a social and public health issue and not just a physical condition. The report begins with an executive summary, an introduction which discusses prevention issues in general and defines concepts, and a list of 27 recommendations. Subsequent chapters discuss: (1) the magnitude and dimensions of disability in the United States; (2) a conceptual approach to disability prevention and use of the tools and principles of epidemiology; (3) major areas of disability (developmental disabilities, injury-related disabilities, chronic diseases and aging, and secondary conditions associated with primary disabling conditions); (4) government and private sector programs concerned with disability prevention; and (5) conclusions and recommendations in the areas of a national program for the prevention of disability, surveillance, research, access to care and preventive services, and professional and public education. Appendixes contain a paper by Saad Z. Nagi titled "Disability Concepts Revisited: Implications for Prevention"; a statement of one committee member dissenting from this majority report of the Committee on a National Agenda for the Prevention of Disabilities; a response to the dissenting statement by committee members; and committee biographies. (Approximately 375 references) (JDD)
