Seismic effects of Rainier, a 1.7-kt nuclear shot detonated 900 feet underground, were measured in terms of ground surface motion at ten strong-motion seismograph stations located 1200 to 45,000 feet from the source. In addition, records were borrowed from seven teleseismic stations located 100 to 300 miles from the source. Recorded accelerations attenuated from a maximum singlecomponent value of 2.6 g at 1280 feet to 0.009 g at 17,640 feet. Gutenberg-Richter magnitude of Rainier, calculated as for a natural earthquake from seven WoodAnderson seismograph records, was 4.6. Earthquakes of 4.6 magnitude are felt up to 60 miles from the epicenter, however, Rainier was felt by only a few observers at 21/2 miles. Seismologists at established teleseismic stations were able to pick out Rainier's elastic wave signature on seismograms at considerable distance. Very small amplitude waves from Rainier were found on the Coast and Geodetic Survey, College, Alaska, seismogram, 3600 km away, although attempts in the eastern United States at distances of 2000 to 3000 km, using conventional instruments, were not successful.

The method used is capable, in principle, of extension to more complex distributions of sources modeling explosions, faulting, and earthquakes. The term "primary seismogram" is introduced to imply that the displacement-time curve is free of uncertainties in source, instruments and propagational characteristics of the medium which are present in the wave records of any real seismic disturbance. The intent of the paper is to both illustrate the technique by an example and to emphasize additional problems and extensions for generating more complex primary seismograms.

Ground effects resulting from certain HARDTACK II underground explosions were measured by strong-motion and teleseismic seismographs from 2000 feet to distances of nearly 100 miles. In addition, many temporary seismographs were operated by a number of organizations to distances of nearly 2400 miles, and routine seismographs continued to operate on a world wide basis. Some of the results are given in this report. An energetic wave believed reflected from the surface near the source was recorded by some of the strong-motion seismographs. It is out of phase with the initial wave and follows it by about a quarter second. From the ground effects standpoint, the Blanca shot was equivalent to a magnitude 4.8 earthquake, and seismic energy contained in a wave 0.8 km. from the source is believed to contain about 0.4 percent of the yield energy. The Logan and Rainier shots were respectively equivalent to magnitude 4.5 and 4.1 earthquakes and corresponding seismic energies contained respectively 0.5 and 0.3 percent of the yield energy.

A Semiempirical technique, utilizing the methods of geometrical optics, is used to examine the effect of geologic layering on the surface peak particle velocity associated with the direct compressional wave produced by underground nuclear explosions. This geometric technique is different from former 'ray' techniques in that it accounts for the curvature of the wave front, i.e., the divergence of the rays, as well as the distance the wave travels. Data from contained nuclear explosions in 'homogeneous' media are used to determine the relationship between the peak particle velocity and the divergence of the rays. This empirical relationship is then used for layered media, where the divergence of the rays is determined by the methods of geometrical optics, to predict the free-surface peak particle velocity. The required transmission and reflection factors are currently taken from the theory of elastic wave propagation. Several parametric studies and comparisons with data from experiments in layered media are presented. It is found that a number of previously unexplained departures from what was measured and what might intuitively be expected are qualitatively and sometimes quantitatively predicted by this technique. It is emphasized that layering between the source and the free surface (which usually occurs) can have a profound and deceiving effect on the surface motion, and, therefore, it should not be neglected in any prediction technique.
