Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been observed from a model acrylic adhesive deposited onto silver island films. SERS spectra of the adhesive system were very similar to SERS spectra of o-benzoic sulphimide (saccharin), a component of the curing system of the adhesive, and to normal Raman spectra of the sodium salt of saccharin. When saccharin was replaced in the curing system by benzoic acid, SERS spectra of the adhesive were similar to SERS spectra of benzoic acid and to normal Raman spectra of benzoic acid salts. The intensity of the SERS spectra was independent of the thickness of the adhesive films, indicating that the observed Raman signal was characteristic of the interface and not of the bulk of the films. These results demonstrate that saccharin and benzoic acid wee preferentially adsorbed at the silver surface to form metal salts and that surface-enhanced Raman scattering can be used for non- destructive characterization of interphases between polymer films and SERS- active metal substrates as long as the films are not so thick that normal Raman scattering from the bulk is comparable in intensity to the SERS from the interphase.

In the course of the development of surface science, advances have been identified with the introduction of new diagnostic probes for analytical characterization of the adsorbates and microscopic structure of surfaces and interfaces. Among the most recently de veloped techniques, and one around which a storm of controversy has developed, is what has now been earmarked as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Within this phenomenon, molecules adsorbed onto metal surfaces under certain conditions exhibit an anomalously large interaction cross section for the Raman effect. This makes it possible to observe the detailed vibrational signature of the adsorbate in the ambient phase with an energy resolution much higher than that which is presently available in electron energy loss spectroscopy and when the surface is in contact with a much larger amount of material than that which can be tolerated in infrared absorption experiments. The ability to perform vibrational spectroscopy under these conditions would lead to a new understanding about the chemical identity, geome try, and bonding of adsorbed material at a level previously unacces sible. It is for these reasons that the last few years have brought an explosion of activity surrounding the exploitation of SERS. The search for the origines) of the anomalous enhancement has given rise to a research sub-activity of its own. Efforts to explain the en hancement have led to an increased understanding of the whole range of phenomena associated with the interaction of photons with adsor bates and metal surfaces.

The interaction of various alkenes with gold electrodes has been studied using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Large decreases, from 70 to 140/cm, were observed in the C-C double bond and C triple bond C stretching frequencies upon adsorption which are attributed to adsorbate-surface bonding involving these groups. The potential dependence of these SERS frequencies suggests that the Pi yield s (sigma band) overlap is more prevalent than the d yields pi* (pi bond) interaction. Carbon-hydrogen stretching vibrations, nu(C-H), as well as other skeletal modes were also detected for the adsorbates; paraffinic, olefinic, and aromatic nu(C-H) modes could readily be distinguished although acetylenic nu(CH) modes were too weak to be detected. Generally, the most intense SERS bands relative to those in the bulk-phase spectra are associated with vibrations of the carbon-carbon double or triple bonds. Attempts to examine SERS of adsorbated acetylene were thwarted by a spontaneous surface reaction yielding a film of polyacetylene.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was used for the non-destructive characterization of interphases between epoxy/anhydride adhesive systems and silver substrates. Normal Raman spectra of benzophenone tetra-carboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) were characterized by strong bands near 1785 and 1860 1/cm that were assigned to the anhydride groups, a strong band near 1690 1/cm that was assigned to the benzophenone C=O stretching mode, and by a strong band near 1620 1/cm that was attributed to vibration and to the benzophenone C=O stretching mode were prominent in the SERS spectra of BTDA but the bands related to the anhydride group were missing, indicating that the anhydride groups were hydrolyzed at the silver surface to form carboxylate groups.
