Book Description
The interplay of magnetism and electronic correlations dominates the physical properties of many rare-earth elements and their compounds. The investigation of the mutual influence of the localized 4f electrons and itinerant band electrons represents a challenging task in theoretical as well as experimental physics. Research areas of current interest are the electronic structure as determined from calculations and spectroscopies, the magnetic properties in three- and low-dimensional systems, open questions concerning transport such as spin disorder resistivity, and the influence of structure and morphology.

Book Description
Complex metal alloys (CMAs) comprise a huge group of largely unknown alloys and compounds, where many phases are formed with crystal structures based on giant unit cells containing atom clusters, ranging from tens of to more than thousand atoms per unit cell. In these phases, for many phenomena, the physical length scales are substantially smaller than the unit-cell dimension. Hence, these materials offer unique combinations of properties which are mutually exclusive in conventional materials, such as metallic electric conductivity combined with low thermal conductivity, good light absorption with high-temperature stability, high metallic hardness with reduced wetting by liquids, etc. This book is the second of a series of books issued yearly as a deliverable to the European Community of the School established within the European Network of Excellence CMA. Written by reputed experts in the fields of metal physics, surface physics, surface chemistry, metallurgy, and process engineering, this book brings together expertise found inside as well as outside the network to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in CMAs.

Book Description
The last two decades have brought a near exponential increase in the amount known about mineral surfaces. Get a handle on this overwhelming mountain of information with The Physics and Chemistry of Mineral Surfaces. This much-needed text will save you hours of tedious journal searches by providing an excellent condensation and overview of the entire field, including its future direction. Top researchers outline atomistic controls on mineral surface structure and reactions; apply these concepts to explain sorption, mineral corrosion and growth; and ultimately consider the role of surfaces in environmental and geochemical processes. This unique text provides a rich and rigorous treatment of these subjects by combining surface physics and chemistry - highlighting their useful, yet often ignored, complementary nature. Unlike other texts, The Physics and Chemistry of Mineral Surfaces also stresses the linkage between fundamentals of mineral surface science and specific real-world problems. This connection facilitates the application of surface physics and chemistry to macroscopic, global processes, such as the origins of life, global warming, and environment degradation. Nowhere else will you find a text on this topic that combines expansive coverage with clear-cut practical applications. Don't miss out! The Physics and Chemistry of Mineral Surfaces has it all.

Book Description
Group III-Nitrides semiconductor materials, including GaN, InN, AlN, InGaN, AlGaN and AlInGaN, i.e. (Al, In, Ga)N, are excellent semiconductors, covering the spectral range from deep ultraviolet (DUV) to UV, visible and infrared, with unique properties very suitable for modern electronic and optoelectronic applications. Remarkable breakthroughs have been achieved in recent years for research and development (R&D) in these materials and devices, such as high-power and high brightness UV-blue-green-white light emitting diodes (LEDs), UV-blue-green laser diodes (LDs), photo-detectors and various optoelectronics and electronics devices and applications. The Nobel Prize in Physics 2014 was awarded jointly to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura 'for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources'. Red and green diodes had been invented since 1960s-70s but without blue LED. Despite considerable efforts, the blue LED had remained a challenge for a long time. The success and inventions on GaN-based LEDs were revolutionary and benefiting for mankind. III-Nitrides-based industry has formed and acquired rapid developments over the world. Incandescent light bulbs lit the 20th century and the 21st century will be lit by LED lamps. Before this book, the editor has edited two books, III-Nitride Semiconductor Materials (2006) and III-Nitride Devices and Nanoengineering (2008), both published by ICP/WSP, in the fields of III-Nitride. The developments of these materials and devices are moving rapidly. Many data or knowledge, some even just published only recently, have been modified and needed to be upgraded. This new book, III-Nitride Materials, Devices and Nano-Structures as the third instalment, will cover the rapid new developments and achievements in the III-Nitride fields, particularly those made since 2009.

Book Description
This book is the second volume in the Handbook of Surface Science series and deals with aspects of the electronic structure of surfaces as investigated by means of the experimental and theoretical methods of physics. The importance of understanding surface phenomena stems from the fact that for many physical and chemical phenomena, the surface plays a key role: in electronic, magnetic, and optical devices, in heterogenous catalysis, in epitaxial growth, and the application of protective coatings, for example. Therefore a better understanding and, ultimately, a predictive description of surface and interface properties is vital for the progress of modern technology. An investigation of surface electronic structure is also central to our understanding of all aspects of surfaces from a fundamental point of view. The chapters presented here review the goals achieved in the field and map out the challenges ahead, both in experiment and theory.

Book Description
This is the second volume in the NATO ASI series dealing with the topic of hydrogen in solids. The first (V. B76, Metal Hydrides) appeared five years ago and focussed primarily on crystalline phases of hydrided metallic systems. In the intervening period, the amorphous solid state has become an area of intense research activity, encompassing both metallic and non-metallic, e.g. semiconducting, systems. At the same time the problem of storage of hydrogen, which motivated the first ASI, continues to be important. In the case of metallic systems, there were early indications that metallic glasses and disordered alloys may be more corrosion resistant, less susceptible to embrittlement by hydrogen and have a higher hydrogen mobility than ordered metals or intermetallics. All of these properties are desirable for hydrogen storage. Subsequent research has shown that thermodynamic instability is a severe problem in many amorphous metal hydrides. The present ASI has provided an appropriate forum to focus on these issues.
