Book Description
A thermoelectric heating and cooling module was constructed for installation in a water to water air conditioning system aboard a submarine. This module has a cooling rating of 2550 BTU/hr. at a coefficient of performance of 0.75 and an operating current of 35 amperes dc. This rating was based on a 85 F sink water temperature and a chill water temperature of 55 F. The unit was designed to withstand submergence pressures and the corrosive effect of sea water in all water passages. It occupies a volume 1 ft. by 1 ft. by 3 inches and was designed for ease in stacking into larger capacity units without additional space being required for coupling between units. It has a weight of 50 pounds.

Book Description
Submarines, those marvels of engineering that traverse the depths of the ocean, are environments of extremes. The constant pressure, the lack of sunlight, and the frigid temperatures pose significant challenges to maintaining a habitable environment for the crew. This is where the art and science of submarine HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) come into play. HVAC systems for submarines are not mere luxuries; they are essential life support systems. They regulate the temperature, humidity, and air quality within the submarine, ensuring that the crew can perform their duties effectively and safely. These systems must operate reliably and efficiently, even in the most challenging conditions. This book delves into the intricate world of HVAC for submarines, providing a comprehensive overview of the systems, technologies, and challenges involved. It explores the design considerations, operational principles, and maintenance requirements of various HVAC components, from chilled water systems to oxygen generators. The book also delves into the latest advancements in submarine HVAC technology, highlighting the development of new refrigerants, energy-efficient solutions, and advanced automation systems. Case studies illustrate the practical application of these technologies and highlight the lessons learned from real-world submarine operations. As submarine technology continues to evolve, so too does the demand for ever more efficient, reliable, and sustainable HVAC systems. This book serves as a valuable resource for engineers, naval architects, submarine operators, and anyone seeking to understand the intricacies of HVAC in the harsh environment of the underwater world.

Book Description
The use of refrigeration, either directly or as part of an air-conditioning system, is essential to almost every branch of industry. There is a need for practitioners to familiarise themselves with the general principles and methods of refrigeration and air conditioning, and the types of plant and operation currently in use. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of refrigeration and air-conditioning for the uninitiated student and a general overview of the industry for the practitioner. The fundamentals of the subject are introduced without involving the reader too deeply in theory and the content is presented in a logical order. This fully revised and updated third edition has a new chapter on Refrigerants that deals with the many changes in this area over the last 10 years, including the phase out of CFC and HCFC refrigerants in line with Ozone depletion and Global Warming. New, replacement refrigerants are described, together with Codes of Practice introduced for maintenance and servicing of refrigeration plants. The increased use of Ammonia and Propane are included, with the relevant Health and Safety aspects, and the move towards Absorption refrigeration equipment as more environmentally friendly. This new edition of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning is a valuable reference source for practising engineers and essential reading for students.

Book Description
Due to a strong industry need, many academies and technical schools now offer courses on refrigeration and air-conditioning. Marine Refrigeration and Air Conditioning introduces this complicated subject in a detailed, straightforward manner. Mechanical refrigeration is used onboard in many ways, including refrigerated ship’s stores, air-conditioning, and refrigerated cargo storage areas. Although reciprocating compressors have been the standard for decades, systems using rotary and centrifugal compressors are quickly becoming the norm. Author James A. Harbach addresses both systems and discusses the changes step-by-step. Since the 1990s, environmental concerns have had a major effect on refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Today’s students are required to learn how to retrofit existing systems and replace entire units. These tasks are explained fully in this title.
